What's the best way to go about storing files when you're running

out of memory? Do I need to get a zip drive or something. I really should have taken more computer classes in highschool. I'm a freaking pathetic in this arena compared to most of my non-dumbass friends.

My comp has a ton of movie and pdf and art files I'd rather not delete but would like to store externally somehow. Any help?

1. Got a CD burner?

Move all your art and movie files to CD.

Or, buy a second hard drive and move it all there.

2. Burn 'em on CDs, get an external USB hard drive,

or add another hard drive to the computer.

Or get a DVD burner, and store them there - 4.5GB per disc instead of the 700MB you get on a CD-ROM.

Zips are okay, but small in storage space. Jaz is better, but quite expensive.

But it's good to have copies beyond your harddrive, since otherwise you'll lose them all when your harddrive fails.

3. External hard drives have gotten pretty cheap

I bought a 120 gig one for $199 at Costco. They've gotten even cheaper since then.

4. If you can't afford hardware, consider a service

There are lots of online storage services. Yahoo, for example, sells Yahoo briefcase. If you own a Mac, you might be entitled to an imac account--which also provides some level of storage. Look at your own ISP to see if they offer anything.

5. CD burner is the best and easiest way to go

Make sure you have a good way to catalog them.

I've been ripping my hair out trying to find one, to be honest. I thought I'd found a great one, called Supercat, that promised I could export to a database and all, but it's not exactly what I wanted, so I'm still looking. I use it 90% for mp3s, though, so that's alright. I can search the database it has until something better comes along.

Oh, and I shave my head, so that ripping my hair out bit is hyperbole.

One day soon, I'll be getting a DVD burner, and then I'll be popular, I bet.
