1. An able repair person would not only TELL you what the part is,

but rob it off of an existing abandoned typewriter for use on yours. Unless that's an extremely rare Remington, it's worth it to buy the same model on e-Bay just for the spare parts. I'll PM you tomorrow, okie dokie? (Beautiful machine!) :hug:

3. Hmm, the only thing that pops up in my mind right now

is to have a very close look at the left side of the carriage. When you do a carriage return, there should be (no idea what its name is) some of these things involved:



And a little advancing stint (also no idea what it's called.)

If you try it without paper, does the platen, or roller, advance to the next line? Then it may be that just the platen doesn't grip the paper anymore because of its age it's like polished. My Underwood did this. If this is the case, it's easy fixable: Get a fine grinding paper and grind the roller a bit - not very much is needed. But from looking at what you wrote the grip seems to be fine and manual advancing does work, just not the carriage return?

The problem has to be on the left on the carriage; look there. I'm sure you'll be able to see what's not going.

On edit: Forgot to add, yep, it's a beauty! On these things, books were written on we still look up too.

4. The advance gear is functioning correctly.

When I use the lever at the end of the line,
the return lever will not advance the
platen unless I release it and then push it again.
I think it is connected to whatever rings the bell.
At anytime before the bell the return lever will return the carriage
and advance the platen either one or two, depending on the setting.

5. Hmm, strange.

Did you try to set the margins at a different locactions and see if the problem (after the bell rings,) occurs there, too? I'll see if I can find something. It's a Remington Rand, the Deluxe model, yes? Made in 1947.

Which gives the production dates as following: Aug. 1940-July 1942, Sept. 1945-March 1949. There are some serial numbers in the link you can check out.

But try to set the margins differently and see if the problem persists. Since it does advance at some point, this might be a very small problem; we just haven't found out yet.

8. What it sounds like to me is the piece that holds the right end of the platen's loose

There's a little lever in there that rings the bell. It sounds like the lever's grabbing whatever holds the right end of the platen in place, which is loose, and pulling the advance gear away from the lever. When you push the carriage rightward, it shoves the parts back together. It's working right before the bell because the platen hasn't gotten a chance to get pulled out of whack.

Grab the platen and try to wiggle it side to side. If you can, start looking for loose screws.

10. Excellent advice!

Do these have a fixed margin? I couldn't find any manual but saw that some had a fixed margin and some of the latter models have a variable right margin only.

One of our telegrapher's mills did what his is doing--they all had fixed margins because the Official Line Length was 69 characters. (Edited because this isn't CMW's machine--sorry.)

while the Sun Devils made 3 field goals in 17 minutes. ASU plays great defense(no matter how good you are, if the other team shoots 70%+ you're not going to keep the point total down) but they do go long droughts without scoring.
