...and only in South Boston, as far as I can ascertain, the sandwich in question is called a 'spuckie'.
The canonical Italian spuckie is:
Mortadella, not bologna Genoa salami not cotto or cooked salami capicola, not ham. Provolone
Pickles Oil & vinegar Hot peppers.
A spuckie, not further qualified, was this sandwich.
