Home. Last time I went it was bloody hot, and the AC at the hotel did not work and the hookers were calling out business too loud to sleep with a window open. Not that the window helped enough to allow sleep anyway.

I hope for a better experience on my next visit, but that was hell. We got in at 10 pm, and left at 3 am, cutting short our honeymoon by several days and requiring us to drive for over 24 hours straight instead of resting, as the hotel wouldn't refund and we were out of money. Not the way I would prefer to think of my birthplace.

8. hard to pick just one- such a gorgeous and fun city

For me it would have to be North Beach and City Lights books. I took the Beat tour last time we were there, great walk and great cafes. I also had a drink at Vesuvio. I then took the bus back through Chinatown to the hotel. The museums are great too, Modern Art and the Asian Art Museum are incredible.


We also love Union Square and the cable cars- touristy I know, but so much fun to ride. Everything about the city is just lovely and fun, I wish I could afford to live there!

all of them. I avoid The Wharf, Pier 39 though.

SF is a walking city. You can cover the embarcadero, Ferry building, Financial district,to Chinatown and Union Square in about an hours walk. lots of great stuff to see. The Palace dining room. The open space of the highrises. tons of shopping. Great churches and restaurants.

The ballpark area is nice too. The 21st amendment is my go to place round there. Also Reds Java Hut for great cheap grub (the one closest to the ballpark, not the one by the bridge). The walk along the Embarcadeo is so nice. The Ferry building rages, with it's organic farmers market out front and the most unusual, cool places inside. Mushroom store. Caviar tasting. Fresh fish market (Not liek the wharf) artisan breads...great restaurants...

For now I love the Lower Haight and Toronado and MemphisMinnies and Rasamunde. Best beers and grub in the city IMO...hard as hell to park though.

But I spend most of my time in the park. Outside lands. Power to The Peaceful. Hardly strictly Bluegrass (next weekend).

I love Java Beach for coffee. Best anywhere.

24. it is such a beautiful city - the views of the bay, the hills, are just breath-

taking. I felt so happy when we were finally able to visit there and then to return a few years later. It is one of my favorite cities, ever. We took the catamaran ride in the bay, under the Golden Gate bridge. It was just incredible seeing the views and all the sailboats. And the ferry rides were also wonderful. I so envy all the folks who are able to live there!

18. The singe go-to spot...

I take anyone visiting me is the top of Twin Peaks -- but only if it is a clear day. The view is unfrickin' believable -- you see all of SF plus Marin and the East Bay. If you go up to the top of the hill that is behind the parking lot you will see a 360 degree view of the City -- just be prepared to get blown around by some very serious wind.

Some of my must-see haunts that are off the major maps are the Columbarium and the Filbert Street steps.

Get out into the neighborhoods -- there are fantastic walking tours that are avaiable (some of them free) where you will get a feel for the real SF.

25. Well, we just spent the day at the Sutro Baths

Such a clear and perfect day - I don't even care about my sunburn! My child and I were in the water the whole time, me trying to keep the knapsack high and dry on my back. And *so many* people were there too; so much fun. I love living here.

28. I lived in that area, and my Grandfather had his buisness

in Menlo Park, Father and Mother grew up there.

I lived in Redwood City for about a year, some great pool halls around there.

Played a tournament or two in the city also, but did not see much of it while living there. There also was a huge country bar in San Jose that was fun.

Had some good times, and some bad times, but overall I liked living there, lots of outdoor concerts in the summer.

I go to different museums or sights each visit but I always have to go to that same bookstore, and to the Paxton Gate store for taxidermy stuff, and the Cliff's tool store because they have funny toys.

41. Other - I did not enjoy northern California when I lived there in the mid 1970's but

I liked North Beach in SF. The band I was fooling with then played in a bar there for free drinks, and I feel we took advantage of the owner - we certainly drank more than we brought in...although my memory is a bit hazy...

I lived in the Berkeley flats, near Uni Avenue and frequented a bar there called the Berkeley Square.

of lordy just that bring back memories! That was my hangout in the 80s -- fantastic place to hear bands -- I saw Chris Isaak before he hit it big and The Flaming Groovies there, among many others.

46. I was there around 75-76...The house band for a nearby place on San Pablo Ave

was Huey Lewis and the News...they were great live!

The band I played with didn't even have a name - I sang lead and played a Rick bass and a blue Telecaster, whish I was folish enough to sell.

44. Not a place, but a show: Beach Blanket Babylon

With its outrageous costumes and biting wit, this show is a brilliant parody of pop culture and politics. The show constantly changes based on current events -- I saw the show on November 6, 2008, and the show and music had already been updated to include material about the passage of Prop 8 just two days prior. The show has been running for almost 40 years, and is definitely a MUST SEE if you're visiting the city!
