| Getting in the Christmas tree in - let the banging and swearing ensue! |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 05:42 PM by tigereye
This is why my husband pines every year for a fake tree. :D It wasn't straight after many cuts to the trunk and adjustments.
Any funny or not so funny tales of Christmas tree mayhem? My mother told me that when her mother complained at length about the crooked tree, my grandfather nailed it to the floor!

| 1. I once worked with a guy nicknamed 'Lucky' |
|
After Christmas one year, Lucky got a bright idea for disposing of his tree. He decided to gradually feed it into his fireplace--whole. Of course, the entire tree immediately went ablaze, setting fire to Lucky's rug, his easy chair, his couch...
The fire department managed to save the house, and Lucky was left to explain the costly damage to his insurance company.
Lucky's nickname was not arbitrary.

| 2. Our military post got this HUGE fir tree (maybe 30-40 feet or so) one Christmas... |
|
. . . ...and some drunken buddies of mine cut off the top six feet or so and dragged it back to their room in the barracks to use as their own personal tree... . . . ...leaving a clear trail in the snow and up the pineneedle-strewn stairway and down the pineneedle-strewn hallway and through their pineneedle-clustered doorway. . . . No serious jailtime or demotions involved... but they were DEFINITELY made to see the error of their ways for quite some time to come. . . . They had also attained "Legendary" status (in both the "AWESOME" and "DUMBASS" categories). . . .

| 3. After years and years of real trees, and picking pine needles out of the carpet... |
|
Dad finally said "I'll get a fake one this year."
He did.
An aluminum one, silver-painted wood pole with heavy-gauge wire "branches" with strips of aluminum foil. :wow: We couldn't hang lights on it, but it had a spotlight with a "color wheel."
It was the ugliest tree imaginable, to this day, in our family, say "aluminum tree" and you get a smile.
The next year we got a green fake tree.

found an aluminum tree, and got a color wheel! To be fair, my dad had the color wheel in the front hall for years, and it looked nice through the leaded glass windows.
I myself prefer a real tree- love the smell.

| 6. We eliminated the "day of strife" in two steps |
|
1. get a fake pre-lit tree 2. assign son #2 (me) to put it up the day after Thanksgiving
This year however my family was in Georgia for Turkey day so my stepfather had to put it up. They are still married so I guess it went better than expected.

|
NO trimming after the tree left the lot!
I bought plenty of trees prior to being married. I'd take the stand to the lot, pick out a tree, have the tree people trim it to fit and leave.
My husband had this idea that he was supposed to bring it home and hack it to near death before putting it in the stand. He would cut off so much, you could not recognize a tree! A couple of times, it ended up being about four feet tall.
After a few years of butchered trees, *I* explained the new rule. We have had a gorgeous tree ever since. :)

| 8. yes, my husband was upset because they never quite make the cut straight |
|
enough so that the tree is straight in the stand. We were talking about how we need to take the stand and have them put the tree in it before we take it home! So yours was a smart idea!
