I got a Ricky 4001 back in 1973 - a new 1972 bass and I was all of 16. Fireglo with checkerboard binding. Delish, and it sounded like gawd's own Bosendorfer when strung up with nice fresh RotoSounds. Wish I hadn't sold it when I switched from pickstyle to fingerstyle back in the 1990s. :(

How do you feel about ordering a stringed instrument without playing it? You just never know what you get. Go to any guitar shop and play a new model Les Paul or Strat. They all feel different.

Actually I played it last week. Two, in fact, at two different stores (and they felt different -- I ordered the one I liked better). Thought about it for a few days, then decided to take the plunge. I would never buy anything I hadn't played -- you're right, that's just asking for trouble.

"Got to find the friend" -- a great way to say it. I tried a few others, but when I played this one, it felt like the notes just dripped off my hand. It was amazing.

Honestly, I ordered a guitar online. Thankfully, after some mods it plays and sounds really well. Fine guitar after the active pups were replaced with a set of Duncan passives:) Its an ESP EC-1000 and had those freakish EMG pickups. Bleh:)

Here's my confession: I just started playing a few months ago. I can do several songs, and am just starting to learn how to improvise and noodle around. I was hesitant about dropping the money on a brand-new bass with that little experience, but the price was right and I couldn't pass it up.

18. Bass guitar was my "2nd instrument" back in HS and college (70's)

I had years of formal Trumpet/cornet training but there were only so many jazz-rock bands to play with.
I kind of let it go for lack of venue but at the time I was really into it. Sometimes I think about picking it up again (gotta be easier than getting your lip back) but playing off old Mel Bay books just isn't that inspiring.

I shoulda took piano lessons. There's always a keyboard around.

25. Just got my first 5-string a month ago

even though I've been playing for, well, a REALLY long time. So now I have a barely broken-in Schecter Stiletto Elite 5 to go with my '97 Alembic Stanley Clarke Signature Standard (bought new) and '91 FoJ Jazz Bass. Getting used to the 5 is proving a bit easier than I expected and the Schecter is an insanely good instrument for the money.

Nothing is more fun than getting a new musical instrument! :)

He's from the Novi Sad area or Serbia. Nicest guy you could ever want to meet. I've known him since 1977 when he
built his first guitars for me. These were the last two (vintage 2000). He put my initials inlaid on the fretboards,
plus he inscribed them as custom made for me in the label on the inside.

Božo is over 80 now, and still speaks horrible English with a very heavy accent. But he's the sweetest guy you
could ever want to know. We talk every year or so. He knows I speak a tiny bit of Serbian, so when he can't find
the right word in English, he switches to Serbian, and usually loses me 90% of the time!

I have a Fender jazz bass, tuned in fifths, and colored indigo.

My sweetie is a guitar player. Why in fifths, you ask? Because I studied piano and violin, so I cannot think in fourths. Does not compute. Also, I can't deal with frets so a jazz bass is logical. I can read bass clef, so I can read music with it.

It's tuned C-G-D-A like a cello.
