Yeah, he's incredibly full of himself, but that's part and parcel of rap these days. It's hard to say that Jay-Z isn't smooth when he wants to be and although Kanye has moved away from straight up rap, he's still doing really inventive and good stuff. Have you heard this?

3. Yeah, Uni-5 is a pretty solid album.

But that is 2010 we're talking about, I'm pretty sure that would qualify as modern rap. There's plenty of good new rap being made (all musical genres, actually), it's just a rarity that you'll hear it on the radio with a few exceptions.

The crap to good ratio is at least 9:1. When I'm in my car, I typically listen to my own playlists. If I'm listening to radio, it's usually classic rock stations because I know my chances are decent of finding a good song.

Undoubtedly one of the most underrated, neglected (at least by the mainstream) hip-hop acts ever. Pharaohe Monche was on a damn near untouchable level in those days.

I'm a middle-aged white chick so they're not trying to get my money, but I learned a long time ago I was cheating myself if I just wrote off a whole genre because the most popular stuff was crap. I tend to like the funnier, "dozens"-style and some stuff that isn't perhaps strictly rap, and even some big hits of the past few years. There's a lot of suckage in any genre, but finding the wheat amongst the chaff can be sorta fun. For me at least.

I can completely relate. I cheated myself for YEARS thinking metal was the only thing worth hearing. I been trying to catch up on everything else for more years.

Oh and one thing that IS new is "streetgrass". Kind of a mix between rap and bluegrass and it's good - not very many people doing it but the guy who does the theme for the TV show Justified is one (maybe the only? lol) Google that ish.
