Downloading Ringtones to my Phone is Becoming a MAJOR Challenge for Me!

I was curious if anyone knows if I can download a song from my itunes library onto my cel phone as a ringtone. These sort of things that are probably easy to just about anyone is a challenge for me(LOL)I tried going on Google to find free ringtone downloads and found it to be impossible.I know I'll have to buy a cable to plug into my Mac and then into my phone but am just curious if anyone knows of a site or a way to talk me through it. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks all!
