Soup leaked in my purse all over my phone

now it's deader than a doornail. I've wiped it down. Any suggestions? Do you think it's permanently a goner?

I've recently gone "semi-retired" on Social Security, and spending bucks on a phone isn't an option.

1. Try this:

Open up the back. Take out the batter pack and the SIM card (or whatever they call it in your phone). Wipe those down very carefully with a clean, dry cloth, and wipe out the inside of the batter compartment.

Put the whole thing someplace warm and dry, like on top of the refrigerator, and let it sit there for at least 24 hours.

Often, when it dries out, it will work again.

16. Add rice and that might work.... and rice does work to dry the

phone out. Ran my phone through a full wash cycle and it still works after drying in rice.

3. Supposedly, if you get a lot of those little absorbing thingies

like what comes with a leather purse, the phone will dry out if you stick it in amongst them.

on edit: the top of the fridge thing sounds much cheaper. :)

4. Take it apart and put all parts in a bag of rice overnight.

I have also used acini di pepe. The grain/pasta will absorb the moisture. If there is hope, this will revive your phone.

Do NOT try to turn on the phone for 24 hours.

because if it's thick you may need to do more than just dry the phone out. IF you have a Radio Shack or some other electronics store nearby they might have a can of electronics degreaser. Spray it in there liberally to clean out any gunk. It's similar to WD-40 but I think you can;t actually use WD-40 because of some of its additives. This stuff should be neutral towards circuit boards and such so it won't short anything out anmd it will evaporate leaving no trace of it behind. (Or no harmful trace, anyway)

Unfortunately, most cell phones these days have moisture indicators inside because the provider will often cover accidents but not if moisture was involved. You might not be surprised at all to know how many phone got dumped into the toilet because of a careless lean over to flush...

20. Well, I don't know if my phone will work

tomorrow, after I pull it out of the rice and those silicone thingees taken out of my old leather purses, after I've blown it with the hair dryer, followed by some squirts with the compressed air. But damn, with your help, I've done all I can do. Thanks for all the advice!

23. Okay all of this will work sort of...but because it was soup you have an additional step.

Yes, do the rice thing and all the other things...but after that, you're still going to have to have it cleaned professionally before you turn it back on or else every time it gets humid, your phone might have issues or simply eventually just die.

That issue is that soup is high in salt, that salt will suck moisture right out of the air so no matter how well you dry it, this problem won't entirely go away until you remove the salt too.
