10. It goes in "cycles.." And, it seems that it's when something in NE

happens that we have these outbreaks of "Southern Bashing Viruses" on DU. A discussion I had with a friend of mine today sort of got to what may be the problem:

The NE isn't the power center it was years ago. When the NE is threatened then folks who are "liberal" like all of us (still here are) get on DU and start to basch Southerners in an "unkind" way.

We Southerners really are great at poking fun and laughing at ourselves for "Mullets," "Flags on Cars" and the BIG NO NO.....the Confederate BATTLE FLAG! We enjoy our really mixed up racist past and really can do a "job" on ourselves.

But, cyclically these DU outbreaks of "Anti-Southern Virus" appear in times where we are "all down."

I would personally like to have a break!

What about "Mid-Western and Western Trash Fests?" What about "Ohio Folks" are racists and they "copy Mullets from those folks in NC and GA and SC!"

Geez.....why can't we laugh more at our differnces on DU geographicaly and not act like "Freeps?"

No DU Southerner is a FREE (they get banned in short order)........so give us a break.......STOP BEATING UP ON US.....when you are stressed!

when my folks split up my mom relocated to philly. my dad (born/raised in lowcountry s.c.) went up to visit her for a week. at the end of his visit, they went to dinner w/all her coworkers. her boss, a total jerk, spent the entire dinner running down all things southern (sound familiar?) and making continuous, usually inaccurate, comparisons between the north & south. at the end of his diatribe he turned to my dad and said "so, harold, you've been up here for a week, what do you like best about philadelphia?"

to which my dad replied, "i-95 south"

there, i feel a little better now.

And you're sure right about Southerners being more than capable of beating themselves up about racism and the wackos down here. I just think the non-Southerners on this board haven't quite grasped some basic facts about the psychology of Southerners (whether liberal or conservative). It's like family. We can give each other hell about it but if you're not from here you can't. (I used to beat up my little brother all the time but if someone else hit him I'd be all over their ass.) We have the same urge to close ranks and defend ourselves from attack as anyone else.

I ran in to a similar happening when I first moved home to VT. I was at an opening party for a gallery exhibition and standing in a group of people having a polite conversation when a woman spoke up and said, "I hate southerners".

I was abashed. I consider myself to be an american quilt since I have lived or at least spent significant time in most of the states and I KNOW that there is good and bad everywhere. If you want to talk about racism, try being a latino in Texas in the 50's and some places even today, or California for that matter. Indians suffer it everywhere. Try being a "spiritually uninformed" child in a school in the Bible Belt or a military "brat" in a civilian neighborhood. How about a poor person in Martha's Vineyard. It's everywhere. In some places it is dressed up a little nicer but the ugly ooze still creeps out the seams.

off to protect our voting rights. The Texas bashing was one of the very first things I noticed here (sort of understandable) and then next was the very in-your-face, "I can say whatever I want because that is freedom of speech" sexism. It is very powerful and very disappointing.

Village-Manhattan, then Yonkers, NY, New Haven, Greenwich, Ridgefield, Conn.....then onto "Princeton, NJ for awhile and now in Raleigh, NC. I'm a Charleston, SC person whose lived in the NE and LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!
I have a PERSPECTIVE! GIVE ME A BREAK ON THIS SOUTHERN BASHING!!!!! I LEFT THE SOUTH......ICOULD BASH It!
But, it's a different dynamic now than then........The NEW SOUTH........does seem to be the "location" for the Repugs that are in Power.....but it doesn't mean that there are HUGE amounts of us Southern/Yankees who defend to the death.....both our cultures......our NE Adopted.......and our Southern Birth Mothers.........

The Anger is at ShrubCo and the miserable economy and phony war. I think many of us our unraveling. Many people reveal their basest instincts when they're under pressure.

Now that sounds ludicrous - but it's scarey as hell when you put it in terms of "If only the WOMEN would shut up about reproductive choice, equal pay, nonsexist language and stereotyping. Then, THEN we could win back the White House."
