| DUers should organize their own poll.......seriously. |
|
I watched the re-run of MTP last night. My head is still spinning about one segment (that Gloria is a piece of work, ain't she?).
The segment on the poll on if Americans support the War in Iraq.
Poll results:
70% of Americans still support the invasion
50% of all dems support the president for the invasion;
(The other 50% is not OPPOSED to it.....maybe 35% (?) are opposed to it and the rest are just "don't know what the hell is happening and don't care" type of thing.)
These numbers can't be right. They just can't be.
I think DU should get the voter rolls for major US cities and a sample of rural of America (for republican and dems and independents) and run the SAME polls -- randomly calling 500 people -- and see what we end up with.
And make it an official poll. We can try to get our numbers out there.
"The DU poll indicates, however, _________________________"
It wouldn't take much.....not much at all.
'course, I guess the DU admin might not take to us using THEIR name for this; in which case....we will have to come up with another name and a website for results.
Heck, we could even have internet polls with questions similar to the official polls.

| 1. No - DU is far too partisan |

There would be little credibility amongst the general public (and the media would slam it). I would support your idea, but really only to satisfy our own curiosity. For publishable results, all you can hope for is that non-partisan organizations take the lead here. I'd love to see the students of a respected professor in academia execute a well-designed poll - one where the questions AND the methodology are published and given as much prominence as the results.

I will organize a poll site. I already have a website up, it's new and is not as popular as antiwar.com or DU but I have quality references and links. And I would focus on just polling if it would be useful. I could simply give the keys to access it for someone that wants to do it and edit it if need be, and it’s all set up already with polling software.
PS I had one poll up and it made the front page of an ultra right wing major website and my new website got thousands of hits by the left and the right, it has slowed down but a liberal poll site would be quite scientific.
Actually about half Republican and half Democrat vote on the site.

| 3. Sound like you are suggesting a poll of people who choose to participate |
|
That is, one of "self-selected" participants. If so, IMO that really won't be too valuable. You need a poll with well-designed questions so as to remove bias, i.e. so that you can measure JUST what you want to measure, and you need to be able to randomly select from your target group, such as "likely voters", for example.
