Report of upturn shifts ground for Democrats trying to oppose Bush

FORT DODGE, Iowa - U.S. Sen. John Edwards cautioned Iowa voters Sunday that an economic turnaround is measured in jobs, not abstract numbers, as he campaigned for the presidency on the heels of an encouraging economic report.

The small crowds in the farm territory of north central Iowa didn't need the reminder.

"The Dow Jones (stock market average) goes up," said Ed O'Leary, a retired postal worker who listened to Edwards speak at a Fort Dodge house party, "but there aren't more jobs."

A report last week showed a rosier-than-expected 7.2 percent growth last quarter in the nation's gross domestic product, the measure of goods and services produced. The good news raised the question of how long the drooping economy will remain a potent issue for Edwards and the other Democrats hoping to win their party's nomination and challenge President Bush next fall.

Edwards, of North Carolina, has long highlighted the jobless rate in his campaign rhetoric, but the recent report underscored the importance of his emphasizing tangible improvements.

4. After Great Depression

After the Great Depression, it took three generations of americian's dying off,before the nation would vote for a right wing republican again. I think the Bush mess may have brought some of the younger one back to the democrat party.

Some Repulbicans will make a ton of money off of the Depression (as they did in the last one), but they'll have the electoral advantage if they can create ad Democratic Hoover.

5. I was watching CNBC when they announced the GDP number

All these pro-Bush analysts were saying they liked the number but they did not see job growth any time soon. They roundly dismissed Treasury Secretary Snow's prediction of 200,000 new jobs per month. They basically said the all time low taxes on investors were starting to grow new production capacity - overseas - not in the US.

8. Real Growth?

Hey,

I read a good article last week about the recent GDP growth and what that means for job creation. Sample quote...

"The Bush boom promoters also sidestep the real issue about the third-quarter growth. It would be hard for the economy not to surge when you consider how much money the administration has poured into it in the form of tax cuts and government spending. It remains to be seen whether the economy can produce jobs and growth without continual booster shots, and whether the massive deficits the administration is running will drag down growth for years to come."

9. Good for Edwards

I am glad to see him addressing jobs. As you can see I am a Kucinich supporter but Edwards is a good man, a lot of people are turned off by the mill worker stuff, but I like that because its nice to hear how people's upbringings affected their lives. He's very populist, I like that. He's also the candiate closest to me geographically. I am really pleased to see him address jobs.
