Clark touts support by Hispanics
By Gary Martin
WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential hopeful Wesley Clark touted the endorsement of Latino leaders Tuesday and announced a television ad campaign as part of a strategy to win states with nominating events Feb. 3, the week after the New Hampshire primary. Clark, who has abandoned Iowa and trails his rivals in New Hampshire, was endorsed by Jose Villarreal of San Antonio, deputy campaign manager for the Clinton/Gore campaign in 1992; Edward Romero, the former U.S. ambassador to Spain; and Arturo Valenzuela, a former State Department official.
"He is a statesmen who is articulating a positive vision as opposed to an angry message," said Villarreal, who was Vice President Al Gore's national campaign treasurer in 2000. Villarreal said Clark has appeal to "all sectors of the country, not just Latinos," and his military service underscores his credentials as "a proven leader."
The Clark campaign touted the Hispanic endorsements during a conference call with reporters in New Mexico, which holds its Democratic primary Feb. 3.
