San Diego: Air America Radio was just a rumor, I guess.

I had gotten an email from someone in my Save Democracy group, saying that KPOP in San Diego was going to start carrying Air America Radio.

Well, it didn't happen (unless it was the middle of the night).

Doesn't mean it won't ever happen, but it certainly hasn't happened yet.

We now have three (3) local pirate radio stations though. Free Radio San Diego, 96.9 FM, and two new ones, 98.5 and 106.9 FM. The first one comes in loud and clear, I can't get the second one, and I can hear the 3rd one with some static.

Meanwhile, I still have shortwave (Canada, Australia), and online streaming.

San Diego's radio skyline will ch-change next Monday with the arrival of Air America Radio at KPOP-AM 1360. The left-of-center programing will intermix local talent with syndicated hosts. It will also move longtime host Mark Larson to AM 600 to help fill a vacancy in their programming schedule. While Clear Channel officials remain mute about the upcoming changes, the World Domination Headquarters is full of what is going on. It is apparent that the adult standards programming at 1360 will cease this week; probably on Friday or the weekend. Meanwhile, down the dial, Mark is expected to host a new show from noon to 3 p.m. on KOGO with Dr. Laura Schlessinger moving to the nighttime from 6 to 9 p.m. Stacy Taylor packs his night-time bags and lands at the new talk station at 1360. His time slot is thought to be in the morning drive. Air America programming at 1360 AM will include live programing from Al Franken -- 9 a.m. to noon. The show also features Katherine Lanpher and will be heard live in the market. Randi Rhodes will be on from noon to 3 or 4 p.m. Randi's website describes her: "The smoky-voiced Brooklyn native with the lightening fast wit cracks the mic and legions listen. One of the country’s first female entertainment and political talk show hosts, Randi has a passion for people.
Her radio talk shows are legendary in South Florida where she has been the comic relief and the pillar of reality when she gives herself to ideas that people rarely express out loud." Meanwhile at KOGO, Mark Larson brings the Larson Chair of Fame to the AM 600 studios with an afternoon show from 12 to 3. At Mark's website: "Mark Larson will join "The Big One", NewsRadio 600 KOGO in Southern California, on Monday August 23rd. For over ten years, he was a popular talkshow host on KCBQ and KPRZ in San Diego. Through August 2004, he was a frequent guest host on Dennis Prager, Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt's network radio programs.
"Mark joined KPRZ in 1994, after eighteen years with KFMB (CBS) Radio in San Diego, where he was Program and Operations Manager and a popular afternoon personality. He served as National Program Director/Radio for KFMB's parent company. At KPRZ/KCBQ, Mark was General Manager from 1994 to 2002, when he began his new daily talkshow on KCBQ.
"In 2001, the Achievement In Radio Awards chose him as San Diego's "Best Talk Show" host." The KCBQ and KPRZ website had Larson's information taken down as of Monday night.Stay Tuned ......

Clear Channel Communications San Diego press release: Clear Channel Radio announced today the launch of KLSD AM 1360, San Diego’s Progressive Talk Station, featuring Air America Radio Network programming beginning Monday, August 23, 2004.
The new “progressive” talk format is a radical new talk format in the San Diego Radio market. The station was created to utilize a combination of local and nationally renowned personalities that reflect the viewpoint of a large segment of the San Diego community.
