L.A. Times cuts 190 jobs

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Times and its affiliated operations in Glendale/Burbank have cut about 190 jobs and closed two weekly papers in the Inland Empire because advertising revenues did not meet expectations, officials said Tuesday.

About 160 job cuts, including 62 newsroom positions, were at the Times. Another 30 came at the Recycler and the California Community News operations, which included two now-defunct local weekly inserts, the Rancho Cucamonga Voice and the Claremont/Upland Voice.

The job reductions came after parent Chicago-based Tribune Co. told Times executives they had to trim costs barely two months after they collected five Pulitzer Prizes, the highest awards in journalism.

Last Friday the paper accepted voluntary buyouts from 42 news staff members, including several veterans. The Times followed up on Monday by laying off 20 newsroom workers. About half of all the workers leaving the paper in this round of cuts took the buyout option, said company spokeswoman Martha Goldstein.
