Some religious nut was preaching on campus today

At my local university I saw some nut standing on a bench with a bible in his hand and he was saying something about dying in sin. I don't really know what he was talking about. I wasn't paying attention.

Everybody around me was wondering who the hell is this nut. I walked by him on the way to class and when he saw the pin on my backpack that said, "Howard Dean para presidente" he probably thought I was the biggest sinner of all. LOL

Has this happened to any DUers here in college? Watching the antics of that conservative religious nutcase really made my day.

Uhh....Cloud, not everyone who reads the Bible or believes in Jesus is a "Nut". What does supporting Howard Dean for president have to with a persons religious beliefs, and why would the "Nut" think you were the biggest sinner of all? Don't you know that we're "all" sinners. Just for the record, Jesus teaches peace, love, and compassion for our fellow sinners. There are many imposters out there who claim to be Christians but aren't.

I think I was misunderstood here. I don't think all believers are nuts. It is just that this guys version of christianity sounded like the Robertson/Falwell/Evangelical variety christianity.

There are a lot of folks in the world that do equate Christian with "nut" (and muslim/jew etc etc) not because they see them all as bible thumping fundie freaks but because they see living your life based on ancient interpretations of even more ancient cultural practices and then "updating" it according to what some hippie supposedly said 2000 years ago - is a truly bizzaro thing to do - in and of itself regardless of how you actually go about it.

I'm a bit non committed on this one myself (maybe just hedging my bets??) but I can understand how some people view even the really "lite" religious types a tad weird.

I think that some people who aren't religious just assume that all Christians are "conservative religious nutcases". That's sad because Christianity teaches just the opposite of conservatism. In all fairness though, I see where they get that opinion, it's from "the imposters".

Have you seen the the percentage of Evangelical Christians who consistently vote Republican? The man seen on campus loudly condemning the lifestyles of total strangers would likely be Evangelical.

Would Southern Baptists be considered Evangelical? Probably so. Pat Robertson is one of them, and so is Falwell, I think. You know, the problem with those "Baptists" is that they're not held under water long enough. :evilgrin:

of course, most xtians dont investigate their religion enough to find out that jesus is completely mythical to begin with! The idea that the all powerful, all knowing, all loving, ever present creator god of all the known universe would appear in a particulary ignorant and violent locale at a conveniently remote part of history and as it turns out, WAS A JEWISH GUY! demonstrates how incredibly cultural religion is. The guy on campus was a salesman. Nothing more, nothing less. He could have been shouting "The fluffy bunny loves you, you sinner! repent and claim the fluffy bunny as your lord" the effect nd the message would be the same

BTW, I didn't notice anything from anybody about restricting anyone's first amendment rights. That's a typical dittohead inverted-logic argument- object to some fundamentalist cant and you're labelled a censor or a hater of the first amendment. I suggest you refrain from that kind of thing if you don't want to be called a freeper.

Yes, they are aiming at those young, fertile minds. It's a shrewd strategy. And it's not only the religious fundamentalists; I hear the GOP in general is intensifying its promotion of young Republican clubs at campuses all across the country.

If this works for them, not only are we all screwed for a very long time to come, but my whole world will no longer make any sense. Conventional wisdom holds that young people are rebellious by nature, and there's nothing rebellious about conservatism. Especially religious conservatism. Do these kids understand that Republicans are the ones who want to outlaw their frat parties, take away their pot, raise their tuition rates by cutting state and federal aid, and criminalize pre-marital sex?

Good grief!! What would be the point in going to college at all? Might as well live with your parents.

13. Right-Wing Fundies--The Cross For Xians to Bear

Right-wing fundamentalist/evangelicals are a cross for the rest of Christianity to bear--even for those more conservative-minded Protestants who disapprove of the extra-marital cavorting that many of us do, yet rightly recognize that the social agenda Democrats have backed for the last few decades is closer to the Nazarene's teachings than the stuff right-wing radio talk show hosts flourish as the True Way.

The equation of "good" Christian living with unthinking adherence to the narrow, mean-spirited sectarian hypocricy practiced by so many politicized evangelicals has probably done at least as much if not more to turn people away from Christianity to other beliefs--due in no small part to these street preachers' behavior.

14. Oh, Lord, Yes, it's happened!

In fact I was known as "Gay Monkey Man" because I asked the visiting evangelist about homosexuality in other animals, and he gave some bullshit answer about how it's the fault of mankind's sin covering the earth. I yelled, "So there are two gay monkeys going at it right now in the Amazon, and it's our fault?" He started to ignore me so I would yell out, "Tell me about the gay monkeys, damn it!" I would hear, "Hey, gay monkey man!" in the student union, and then when I moved 60 miles away for my first real job, I went to a talk by James "The Amazing" Randi, and there were two people in the room (other than Randi setting up), and the girl looked at me and asked, "Aren't you the gay monkey man?" :)

The other memorable thing was another time the evangelist started talking about the sin of dancing when I spotted a very good Latina friend walking my way. I stopped her and asked if she could show me that one dance step we had been working on recently, and we started dancing in front of this guy and 75-100 students. He then started yelling at us, and after some initial confusion, my friend got the joke (still hit me playfully though).

rights while I was on campus.

Going on and on. One of his rants was about "Stairway to Heaven" being evil because it was based on Tolkien's works. Pretty funny, because he was trying to twist it around that some vague references in it were representing stuff in "The Hobbit" were about Satan/sinning/whatever.

Not being big on Zep, I didn't realize until much later that the idjit was, of course, ill informed. "Ramble On" actually names names, like "and Gollum, and the evil Wargs, crept up and slipped away with her".

Now that I think about it, this guy may have been part of a Psych 101 experiment. There were some others I noticed as time went on, like the student leading the blindfolded student. (That one pointed out that our society likes to talk to the "normal" person, not the "thing in the XX", where XX is a wheelchair, or a blind person, or a handicapped person).

He came to my campus the 2 wk of school this year. Me and a few other guys started yelling back for about 8 hours over 2 days about how he just wants to change everyone and take their money.

We also found out that a local church paid him 5 grand to come.

Overall though, the incident helped me adjust to college scene and meet a whole bunch of cool people.

It says something like: "And when thou prayest, stand not on the street corners like the hypocrites do, for they like to be seen. Rather, when thou prayest go into they closet and pray in private and you shall be heard".

It's not a quote, but it's a fairly accurate paraphrase.

yeah, in a religions lecture this baptist came and spoke to us. big black bible and all. i asked him about original sin; he said that jesus died for everyone's sins, even people who will be born centuries from now and that if you don't accept jesus, (even if your religion doesn't acknowledge jesus) you're going to hell. so i told him i didn't believe in original sin because i think people are born good, etc. his answer was basically that for for refusing to accept jesus christ as my lord & saviour, i would be welcomed into hell.

20. I go to NCSU

and there have been at least four different nuts here. We call them "brickyard preachers", (they preach in a open area nicknamed the brickyard).

The most famous (and the favorite by far), is a guy named "Gary Birdsong" (do a google search). These guys, and espically this one, make my day, they are like entertainment. Half the fun is the crowd's reactions.

Gary travels all over the eastcoast universities, preferably the public secular ones.

Oh, and there is no question that these guys are nuts. They have no idea what Christianity really is(all homo's go to hell, all D's and liberals go to hell, Catholics go to hell, etc...)

21. I don't think I've ever seen someone preaching...

But today in my speech class I had to hear how great capital punishment is. How banning late term abortion is a good thing, and about some religious organization on campus that we should all go out and join.

then I got up there and talked about how creationism has no place in science classes and is a waste of time, money, and recourses.

In retrospect, I did hear a statement about reforming drug education, it had a leftist slant to it. And I heard about how marijuanna should be legalized for medical use (but that kid really didn't do that well on his speech) and I heard a speech about how the death penalty should be abolish. so, oh well, it all balanced out in the end.

Frankly, I was just happy that I didn't have to hear another one about drinking and driving, the drinking age, drinking laws, smoking bans, smoking in public, the dangers of smoking.
