Record 21% Of Americans Think They'll Get Canned In The Next Year

Payrolls may finally be creeping higher, but Americans are more scared than ever of losing their jobs.

Gallup's poll of employed Americans found that 21% think it is likely they will be laid off in the next year. Only 38% are confident they won't be laid off. Both indicators are at record levels and getting worse.

Rising fear shows the average American does not believe in the recovery.

they SAY that we must improve our stock price - that is our chief goal now - not product - improved stock price. What is the easiest way to up stock price? Lay off workers so wall street will give our stock the "restructuring" bump, so the execs can cash out their stock at a better price.

Screw the workers.

5. I am surprised

I am surprised. I worked at Wall Street and I saw companies outsourcing anything and everything they possibly can. Whole departments like the IT department was sent overseas.

Another problem is that fear causes people to freeze up their purchases. If they truly believe that they are going to be fired, they will not buy big ticket items like houses or cars. If people think that they are going to be let go they save in anticipation that they will need cash to survive unemployment.

And if people do get hired, it will take time to rebuild their savings which means it will take a while to get out of the recession.

But they've let go of about HALF of our

20. the initials HP make my blood instantly boil

the criminal ring they harbour used info garnered from a laptop "stolen" from the wife (a VP at Fidelity, manager of what remains of our pensions) of an HP employee (in my old job) combined with my resume (which he lured me into sending him with the bogus offer of freelance project work) to steal my identity. From the laptop they got my SSN, old address and phone; from the resume my current address, phone, education and employment history.

The FTC told me to call HP's hr dept. They don't answer their phones or return even the most detailed of messages left. I HATE HP. I HATE HP. I HATE HP. :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

I cannot help but wonder how much of their "recovery" and "profits" is due to their theft and selling of former employees identities. :grr: :grr: :grr:

19. I was sure I'd be dumped after tax season

instead, they pulled me off the phones during peak hours to protect themselves from the quality company that listens in and scores calls for their clients. And are investing in me with training on a favored client. (I work in a call center for the mutual fund industry, getting screamed at nightly for a grand 12 bucks or so/hour. This after a 20 year career in high tech marcom, where I rose to a low 6-figure salary before W destroyed my life.)

So I guess the financial titans feel secure about their futures.

decision. And have you seen any pro-Union legislation pass through congress? Me neither. In fact that tax on so called "Cadillac" health insurance plans which made it into the HCR bill, is aimed right at Unions and making life difficult for their members.
