Cape Town - South Africa is one of the biggest liquor consumers in the world with a per capita consumption of 10litres alcohol (hard liquor) an adult a year.
Serious alcohol abuse, which exceeds any other substance abuse, costs the country R9.5bn rand a year, which amounts to as much as 2% of the gross domestic product.
According to various studies by the Medical Research Council's alcohol and substance abuse research group, South Afrcans consume more than six billion litres of alcohol products a year.
