NY Post: Kid has Bright Idea
KID HAS BRIGHT IDEA
TURNS ON POOR NYERS TO ECO-FRIENDLY BULBS
By RITA DELFINER

BRILLIANT: Fifteen-year-old Liberty Medal nominee Avery Hairston is helping fight global warming.August 13, 2007 -- When Avery Hairston heard Al Gore talk about global warming, he saw the light - and now the 15-year-old East Sider aims to turn New Yorkers on to energy-saving light bulbs.

Last spring, the Collegiate School freshman founded RelightNY, an environmental group, with a team of "equally dedicated" classmates who raise money to buy compact fluorescent bulbs, then donate them to low-income families.

"It's such a simple step," said Avery, who hopes to spread the word that the squiggly CFL bulbs cost more to buy than traditional ones "but, long term, save you money because they use less energy."

....

He added: "I don't want to be part of the generation that made the wrong choices and kind of let down everyone in the future."

1. Very impressive project
Helping low income families and raising global climate awareness at the same time.

3. Although it's not popular here
(or with me; but it's the cheapest place to buy some things), the last time I was in Walmart (I spent like $10), there was a big bin of CFLs at $.75 per.

These were Lights of America brand (supposedly made in America), which were the first CFLs I ever bought (like 16? years ago; cheap ones cost like $5-7 per then). Generally, CFLs last for years (I've had some heavily-used CFLs last for more than 7 years); but the odd "bulb" fails prematurely; and post initial installation, failure has always been graceful.

4. I have had generally positive experience with CFLs
Most have been very good workers - one type of the round CFL I have used doesn't seem to last too long. Maybe its the moisture buildup in my bathroom where they are that causes them to only last a year... but still, that's not too bad.
