Cord wood prices, anyone?

I just paid $232 for a cord of wood delivered, up 32% over a year ago - New England. At least one local wood supplier has been sold because he couldn't afford wood from the loggers, and the company he was sold to has almost no wood. The only reason I got wood is that I've been buying from the same company for almost ten years, and they have wood because they pay loggers on delivery. My guess is that supplies will dwindle as the year progresses, putting wood costs up at the same time home heating oil costs skyrocket.

What are others paying for cordwood in New England and elsewhere?

2. that's not much more than my deal-hound brother found in central Maine

I think he paid $185/cord for 4 cord unseasoned, split mixed hard/softwood, delivered

he ordered it at least a month ago and 2 cord has been delivered so far...
the pieces are so big they are splitting most of them again before stacking

3. $4.50/gal for the chainsaw and a 6 pack of beer for when we're done

We have a bunch of standing dead trees that need cutting up for firewood. Thank you for posting this as I have been curious how much it costs to buy if you don't have woods of your own.

4. $232 split and delivered sounds about right for southern Maine

My brother paid $185 in May for 3 cords in central Maine.

I cut and split 2+ cords for myself in May...and ordered 5 tons of pellets $269/ton delivered...

Even at these prices, wood and pellets are way cheaper than oil (which will be >$5 a gallon by September).

Usually this time of year, Maine Custom Firewood in Pownal gets four to five calls a day. The company is now getting 30 to 40 calls daily, said co-owner Tom Cushman, a professional logger.

The company last week stopped answering the telephone. Callers now get an answering machine message saying it has suspended taking orders.

Those able to find firewood are going to pay more for it. A cord of green wood is selling for $220 to $260. Last year, a cord sold for $180 to $190.

Barbara Price of Scarborough thought she was all set for winter when she recently installed a new wood stove.She called a firewood dealer in early June and left a message ordering two cords of wood. She called back the company last week and found that the company never got the message and that there was no wood available. She’s now on a waiting list.

7. 200-250 a cord is about right for Northern CA too

...where some people I know in OR go to sell their wood. Here it can be found for 150 to 200. I've heard that down in the LA area it goes for more like $300 a cord, but then air regs hardly allow wood stoves or fireplaces.

9. Here in northeast OK wood is sold by the rick

a rick being 4 ft X 8 ft at whatever length you need but mostly it is cut in 18 inch lengths. It was selling for 45 bucks a rick here this past winter. I buy wood pellets by the ton for 185 bucks, last years price. we'll use around two tons a winter. The first winter we used wood pellets to heat with was the winter of '91/'92 and I can't imagine going back to a regular wood stove. We use regular wood in our shop though.

10. Around here you get a free permit from the Forest Service,

drive out from 5 to 30 miles, stop to pick up a twelve pack and have at it....

If you have to buy it, the prices could be anywhere from 90 to 250 per cord depending on species and quality-- Split Oak being highest and pine branches being lowest. If you're really broke, you might go for "busted up stolen pallets...."
