Those who see nuclear power as part of the solution to America’s energy problem got a shock from newly released documents. It’s sticker shock.

The cost for Tennessee Valley Authority to build two proposed new nuclear units in Alabama could be as much as $17.5 billion, more than twice an estimate made last year.

A large part of the issue involves TVA’s debt for power plant construction. It stands at about $25 billion, almost twice what the agency had predicted 11 years ago that it would be today. TVA has typically underestimated both its construction costs and its debt.

The debt, of course, is paid off by rate payers. That’s us.
