http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/news/article/2009/04/renewable-energy-plays-big-role-on-earth-dayRenewable energy is set to take center stage tomorrow as Earth Day activities take place across the United States. In San Francisco, the city's Budget & Finance Committee will be voting on what would be California's largest solar photovoltaic power project – a 5-megawatt, 25,000 panel system covering the equivalent of 12 football fields on the rooftop of the Sunset Reservoir at Ortega Street and 24th Avenue.
If approved, the project would triple the amount of renewable energy generated in the City by 2010. This would mean more clean power for public services and buildings such as Muni, SFO, streetlights and city schools. This shovel-ready project will also create immediately 70 green jobs, including electricians, laborers and operators.
Cruise Car Inc. will showcase its solar electric hybrid vehicles on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. p.m. to demonstrate the ecological and economical benefits of operating solar powered low speed vehicles.
"What could be better than Earth Day to show people just how much we benefit from the sun," says Greg Hyde, spokesman for Cruise Car. "Solar energy is rapidly growing in its potential for providing alternative energy solutions and we are here to show people how they can use the free resources of the sun for low speed vehicle transportation."
