MANILA, Philippines—Global warming could be the cause of rains this summer in Metro Manila, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday.
Robert Sawi, officer-in-charge of the forecasting section of PAGASA's weather bureau said the summer rains have been unusual. "It’s really unusual to have strong rains in the middle of April. Global warming might be a factor but this is not yet conclusive," Sawi said.
Global experts have raised the alarm that extreme weather conditions are the result of global warming and climate change. Sawi noted that at the start of summer, climatologists had warned that the season would be characterized by "La Niña-like" conditions. "La Nina" is a global weather phenomenon that causes abnormally wet weather.
Chris Perez of the forecasting center said the country should expect more rains in the next few days but clear weather by the weekend.
