Solar power could surge by 2050 in deserts: study

25 May 2009 - Concentrating solar power (CSP) could generate up to a quarter of the world's electricity by 2050, according to a report by environmental group Greenpeace, the European Solar Thermal Electricity Association (ESTELA) and the International Energy Agency's (IEA) SolarPACES group.

Investments in CSP plants were set to exceed EUR2bn ($2.8bn) worldwide this year, with the biggest installations under construction in southern Spain and California. "Concentrating solar power could meet up to seven per cent of the world's projected power needs in 2030 and a full quarter by 2050," it said.

With every edition we have increased the projected market volume significantly, and it finally turned over a billion dollars in 2008, this amount could double in 2009. While we highlighted in our first joint report the huge market potential, we were able to move to another message in 2005 when we launched the second report in Egypt: "CSP is ready for take off!".

1. Good thing we'll have surging global deserts by 2050 too

Lots of real estate to install all that solar on, what with all that pesky forest and farmland reduced to swirling sand dunes. It's a win-win situation!

the so cal desert rooftops should be swamped with solar. well too bad I guess.
