Now, we at Grist don't like to encourage contests of "who art the greenest of them all," but we think this tote bag (made of recycled cotton and soda bottles, natch) for the hardcore bike lover really makes a(n uncensored) statement about the iconic Prius and its pious following.

On the other handlebar, it could just be that all that spandex makes you more likely to attend a bike-to-jerk day rally.

1. cyclists like to forget

bicycle makers invented the airplane, which is one of the most polluting things of all.

The less machinery the better. Walking and running are much more natural than biking or driving, and our communities should be formed around the scale of walking if we ever hope to be fully human again.

It is a simple machine a force multiplier.

Walking and biking do use fossil fuels though.

They are powered by calories and those calories come from food and the food is produced using fossil fuels.

Moving by bike uses roughly half the energy per mile than walking and roughly one third of that compared to average motor vehicle.

Of course one could argue that some of the calories from biking are "free". People tend to eat to much (+ caloric intake) and thus the calories burned from biking (or walking) would only bring caloric burn in line with higher caloric intake.

Humans lose energy when walking by lifting their bodies with every step. On a bicycle, the only thing that moves are your legs (aka "Pistons").
