A program that had been established five years ago by the North Dakota Farmers’ Union (NDFU) to issue carbon credits to farmers has been left without the necessary funds thanks to the failure of the U.S. Congress to pass a climate bill this year.
The NDFU carbon credit program provided extra income to farmers and ranchers in North Dakota who successfully and significantly reduced their carbon output. Since being established in 2005, the program has paid out more than US$7.4 million to farmers in the state.
