A dozen workers with full protective gears entered for the first time Thursday one of three reactors of a Japanese nuclear power plant damaged by tsunami on March 11 to start repairing the facility’s cooling system.


The workers installed pipes that will filter out radioactive air inside the reactor no. 1 of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, according to officials of the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), which operates the plant.

The workers were divided into four three-member teams and each team worked for 10 minutes at a time to reduce the risk of radioactive contamination.

The pipes will direct air inside the reactor to a ventilator at the adjacent turbine building. The ventilator will filter out radioactive substance and return the air to the reactor area. When the high radioactive level of the air inside the reactor no. 1 is lowered, the workers will then connect it to a cooling system outside to lower the temperature.
