How are they different from others?

I've a small 45 watt hobbyist setup right now, mostly parted from China I think. But I'm thinking of expanding it, or creating a few little systems, rather than a single, whole house system.

Now that's an interesting idea. Hopefully combined with daylighting and some other passive solar add-ons like proper overhangs, you could convert one room then move on to the next, spreading the work and expense over a number of months or years. Genius!
