And though the southern Great Plains situation may ease the drought is predicted by some climate people to expand north into Northern Great Plains and S. Canada plains.

because we have just officially ended the driest 3 months in history.
Yes, it's a desert. However, we do generally have enough rain/snow to support scrub vegetation. This year, the fight over water will be intense, NM farmers pitted against Texas farmers, for inadequate snow melt flowing into the Rio Grande.
Even the weeds won't grown in my yard this year.
