Putin meets Beslan mothersFriday, September 2, 2005 Posted: 1353 GMT (2153 HKT)
MOSCOW, Russia -- Russian President Vladimir Putin told mothers of
children killed a year ago at Beslan's School Number One that the
government could not guarantee complete security for its people in the
face of terrorism.
But he said that was no excuse for officials in southern Russia to have
allowed such a terrible tragedy.

But angry Beslan residents and groups such as the Beslan Mothers'
Committee say too many questions are still unanswered.
The bereaved mothers have demanded an official inquiry into how
militants managed to get inside the school.
They also want to know whether the response by security forces was
proper and competent, and whether the one surviving participant of the
siege on trial has been made a scapegoat while others involved may
have gone free.
