Senate Republicans Weigh Dismantling CIA

WASHINGTON - Senate Intelligence Committee Republicans proposed removing the nation's largest intelligence gathering operations from the CIA (news - web sites) and the Pentagon (news - web sites) and putting them directly under a new national intelligence director.

Sen. Pat Roberts (news, bio, voting record), R-Kan., the committee chairman, unveiled on Sunday the most sweeping intelligence reorganization proposal offered by anyone since the Sept. ll commission called for major changes.

Roberts said his aides had spoken with White House officials and would share the details of his proposal with them on Monday.

Roberts' bill would take the CIA's three main directorates — Operations, which runs intelligence collection and covert actions; Intelligence, which analyzes intelligence reports; and Science and Technology — and puts them into new, separate and renamed agencies, each reporting to a separate assistant national intelligence director. It also would remove three of the largest intelligence agencies from the Pentagon.

1. I've a friend who works

for the FBI. It's definately broken. Ten years ago, the CIA forgot to notice that the USSR was going broke. A friend of a friend works for the DEM and says they do nothing because they no longer have anything to enforce.

The essence of it is, that we had two lumbering agencies still operating under the auspicies of the Cold War. We experience a major intelligence failure. We create a third. None of them communicate with each other. It's so lame

2. I don't know how anyone can be aquainted with the history

of the CIA or the FBI and think they are not both badly "broke".
