Spain to Legalise Contracted Immigrants
Spanish government plans to legalise the immigrants holding labour contracts with local employers, according to El Pais daily.
The move came in need to tie immigration with the labour market, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was quoted saying. It also constitutes a priority in his Cabinet's program, which tries to establish measures to deal with the expected clandestine flow of immigrants after the recent EU expansion.
Labour market regularization will provide as well for legalizing those immigrants "without documents" who inform officials about employers benefiting from illegally hired foreign workers.
Since May 1 the Union extended to a bloc of 25 member countries. Bulgaria and Romania are scheduled to join them on January 1, 2007.
