POLICE SHOOTING: Suspect bought gun

Purchase was made legally despite man's history of mental illness

The suspect accused of killing a man and wounding two police officers last week bought a gun days before the shooting despite a lengthy history of mental illness, according to police and the suspect's attorney.

On Thursday, police say Frank Lyles, 26, of Las Vegas, fatally shot a man to death on Bonanza Road, near Martin Luther King Boulevard. A police officer responding to the shooting was shot in the face and a second was wounded by shrapnel.

Both officers will survive.

Las Vegas police Lt. Tom Monahan confirmed Monday that days prior to the shooting, Lyles was able to purchase a firearm at a local gun store. Monahan declined to release the location of the gun store, but he said the seller followed the law and conducted an appropriate background check on Lyles.

GARY — Residents wishing to apply for a gun permit, or renew an existing permit must follow a new procedure beginning next week, Deputy Chief Jeff Kumorek said Monday.

“All applications will be processed during an appointment made in advance,” Kumorek said.

The Gary Police Department opted to require appointments after a review by the Indiana State Board of Accounts, which found numerous applications had been picked up, then never returned.

“It looked like we collected money and never processed the application,” Cmdr. Joseph Slay said.

A Pinson man, upset over Alabama's double overtime loss to Arkansas, held a gun to his son's head and pulled the trigger shortly after Saturday's game ended, authorities said.

The bullet narrowly missed 20-year-old Seth Logan, who now acknowledges he had picked the wrong moment to ask his dad for a car, sheriff's spokesman Deputy Randy Christian said Monday.

Joseph Alan Logan, 46, surrendered just before the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department SWAT team arrived to take him into custody. He was charged with attempted murder and domestic violence and was released from the county jail Sunday on $7,500 bond.

"I know we take football serious in the South," Christian said, "but that's crossing the line."

Man accused of posing threat to Ridge convicted of gun charges

A convicted felon accused by federal authorities of posing a threat to Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge and others was convicted of illegally owning guns.
After a one-day trial Monday, U.S. District Judge Maurice Cohill Jr. found Douglas B. Leuschen, 53, of Strattanville, guilty of illegally owning a pistol, four rifles, a shotgun and ammunition in July of last year.

Leuschen faces as much as 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in January.

Leuschen was barred from owning handguns because of several felony convictions, including one of pointing a gun at a motorist who pulled in front of him in traffic in Erie in 1989. He also has a conviction for assault in Virginia in 1980.

According to court records, Leuschen said he had a right to defend himself against "belligerents," was ready to "go to war" and had recently driven past Ridge's family home in Erie.

RED DEER, ALTA. - Josif Fekete brought his three-year-old son home Sunday night after a visit, shot the boy's mother then turned the gun on his son and then himself, police said.

The 45-year-old man had been separated from his wife, Betty, for about a year. They had an ongoing custody dispute over their three-year-old, Alex.

Josif Fekete had the boy for a court-ordered visit Sunday, and brought him home about 6:30 p.m.

When Betty Fekete came down from her third-floor apartment to pick him up, her husband pulled out a shotgun and killed her, his son and himself, police say.

Maryland State Police said they arrested a Cavetown man in connection with an alleged road rage incident that included the brandishing of a handgun.

Police said they charged Richard A. Jones, 41, whose exact address was unavailable, with two counts each of first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment following an incident Monday evening on Maryland Route 66.

Couple weds at gun show

GREAT FALLS -- The romance between Herb Dawson and JoAnna Webber began at a gun show. So they thought it was only appropriate to get married at one.

Their "shotgun wedding" took place Saturday evening amid friends and family at the Great Falls Gun and Antique Show in Four Seasons Arena.

Dawson met Webber seven years ago at a gun show in Butte, when he sold her a holster.

The man claims his pizza was more than an hour late.

ROCKTON — A man irate over what he said was a late arriving pizza fired a gun at the owner of a local pizzeria Sunday night.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. at the home of Robert E. Moye, 45, of Rockton.

No one was injured.

Eight-year-old Melinda Alice Reyes, who was struck by a bullet during a weekend drive-by shooting, has told her mother she's afraid to play outside again.

Melinda, who was listed in fair condition Monday in Women's and Children's Hospital, was playing cards with a cousin Sunday afternoon on the sidewalk along Massachusetts Avenue near her home when gunfire erupted and a bullet tore through her right shoulder.

"She thinks that if she comes home again, she'll be shot. . . . She's kind of scared to come back home," said her mother, Mary Alice Santiago.

"They should feel guilty. They shouldn't have been shooting. There were over 20 kids playing out there," Santiago said. "I just thank God she came out of surgery alive."

DENVER -- A man was shot at the Syracuse Market in northeast Denver Tuesday afternoon and police were looking for the gunman.

Police were called to the grocery store in the 1100 block of Syracuse shortly before 12:30 p.m.
