http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/cvus/current/cv06107.pdfThe longer times are probably in suburban/rural areas and some inner cities, I suspect.

Self-defense really is a personal problem.
That just isn't making any more sense to me than the other one ...

| 3. I moved to an affluent Connecticut suburb at age 14 |

They had fast response times for emergency services.
Never had to call the cops, thank god, but there was one time...
I was finishing up my Saturday-morning bowling and was leaving my lane to walk out the door at the end of lane 44 or whatever. I was at like lane 10.
Suddenly this mom come crashing out of the ladies' room with her infant screaming "My baby's choking! My baby's choking!"
The manager turned to the girl behind the rental desk, yelled "Call 911!", then he and everybody nearby converged on the lady and the infant.
I was like 19 and didn't see any need to get in the way of people that might actually know what they're doing, so I continued walking out the door. About 30 lanes, so maybe, what, 40 yards total?
I walked out the door, walked a couple dozen yards to my car, and a fire engine come screaming into the parking lot with lights flashing and sirens wailing. Firemen jump out and run inside carrying emergency medical supplies.
That's FAST!
And the people in the alley got the baby's throat cleared before the firemen even got there, so happy endings all around.
