Obama again promises not to take guns while supporting AWB.
Obama: Don't stock up on guns

QUOTE
"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven't indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word."

"We don't dispute because the numbers from the federal system certainly confirm that there is increased activity out there. We just think it's a bit stupid," said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence.

"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue. We don't think these are first-time buyers. We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more."
UNQUOTE

Sorry but many gun-owners will not believe Obama as long as his Urban Policy web site says Obama and Biden “also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.”

Obama's promise and the web site statement suggest Obama doesn't have a clue about the AWB and its effect on popular semiautomatic firearms.

He promises not to smoke in the White House and he needs to promise to veto any bill to renew the assault weapons ban.

1. Obama could make this all go away...
All he has to do is reach out to gun owners, which he hasn't really done yet. He's just using the Third Way playbook, which all of us have been able to see through for at least four years.

2. No one believes this at the ranges where I shoot.
The lose language in HR 1022 is wonderful for BATF. By the time they create regulations, all kind of guns may be illegal. Look for a lot of "Audacity of Deciet" bumper stickers.

3. I have to wonder exactly what interpretation of the 2nd does he believe in.
Obviously NOT the one that requires a well armed civilian militia or that includes "popular guns in common use".

And what the hell is Hamm talking about? "think they need to rush out and buy...how quickly we make progress on this issue"??? He seems to be saying that the anti-gun progress is SOO slow, that there is no need to rush to buy them? Well - that IS comforting! Thanks Pete - so you'll just take your time getting those guns banned, and I will hold off buying more, OK? Right - and maybe Santa will bring me my next one personally!

4. Investing in "assault weapons" is better than investing in the ...
stock market.

At least that's what a lot of gun owners feel. What happens if Obama and the Democratic congress fails to push a new AWB? The price of "assault weapons" might be just another bubble about to burst.

5. Look my problem is that I can see and support both sides, even
understanding people collecting all types of weapons, but the government is not going to come banging on your door in the middle of the night and take away your guns, it's just not going to happen, but I have a problem with gang bangers carrying weapons and the solution is not everyone carrying weapons, it's just not safe. In all my 67 years I've never needed a gun to "save myself" oh wait I better rush out and buy one, you never know. I live in an wild area with bears, lions.deer and hunters, and we all get along just fine. The threat is not weapons it's how we interact with one another.

7. There are some moving pictures of post-Katrina door banging...
only the door-busting went on in broad daylight.

I also have a problem with gang bangers carrying weapons. As has been suggested by some in these threads, any law violated in which a firearm is utilized should result in an additional penalty for such use, not a concurrent penalty. This may help.

I haven't seen anyone in these threads advocate "everyone carrying weapons."

I am 60 and own a weapon with which to "save myself." Don't think I'll need it; 'don't think my house will burn (however insured).

I agree with you about "it's how we interact with one another."

9. On gang bangers, etc.
Look my problem is that I can see and support both sides, even understanding people collecting all types of weapons, but the government is not going to come banging on your door in the middle of the night and take away your guns, it's just not going to happen...

Most people do not worry about government firearm confiscation. What people worry about are bans on future sales of currently available firearms.

...but I have a problem with gang bangers carrying weapons and the solution is not everyone carrying weapons, it's just not safe.

First of all, all rifles, let alone assault rifles, account for less than 3% of all homicides, according to FBI data. Hands and feet kill about twice as many people as rifles do.

Secondly, very few people advocate that everyone should carry weapons.

In all my 67 years I've never needed a gun to "save myself" oh wait I better rush out and buy one, you never know. I live in an wild area with bears, lions.deer and hunters, and we all get along just fine.

In all my 40 years I've never needed fire, life, or flood insurance, or the fire extinguisher and first aid kit in my car, but I have it anyway, just in case.

8. An obvious contradiction.
"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven't indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word."

Many lawful gun owners own assault rifles. A ban on such weapons is included in both the Democratic Party Platform, and Obama's agenda on www.change.gov.

Why wouldn't they have something to fear?

So long as it is part of the Democratic Party Platform and Obama's Urban Policy, there is a legitimate fear that we may not be able to purchase certain kinds of currently available weaponry.
