The stories you are posting are of parents who neglected child proofing their homes. Here in Florida we have children turn up at the bottom of pools every summer. When you know you have a loaded gun in the house it should be where a child cannot get to it. When you have a pool, it should have a lock high up and a fence around it if you have small children. One of my best friends has burn scars over a good part of her body from overturning a huge coffee urn on to herself while trying to climb a counter to get at a plate of cookies near it as a toddler. Parents have to be responsible whether gun owners or not.

That the NRA fights. Everyone should be allowed to have a loaded gun in their nightstand - and when a kid gets that gun and ends up dead, it's called an accident. Try to change it, and you're labeled a gun grabber.

Guns are not all gloriously killing bad guys. That's a small minority of what guns are used for in this country.

Regardless, I would hope accidental gun deaths would have decreased just from the increased use of trigger locks. That's why it would be nice if some of these "accidental" shootings were charged because you should not keep a loaded gun in a house with a child, not ever.

This is fact. Fewer people and households own guns now than in years past. The remaining people who own them may own more than people in the past did because they're more enthralled with their guns, but fewer own guns.

The ownership rates if they have dropped haven't decreased anywhere near the proportion that accidental deaths has. Could it be that those people so enthralled with firearms actually handle them safely?

25. Guns NEVER gloriously kill ANYONE. There is no glory in shooting anyone...

despite what small minority of pro gun people profess. There is only the agony of losing a loved one to a violent offender, or the relief that you were able to deter that from happening. Every death is tragic. It is tragic when people are so desperate that they want or need to rob others using weapons. It is tragic when people are so messed up that they choose to kill their family and themselves. It is tragic when kids or adults are so angry and alienated that they feel they need to take revenge on society by killing others. The problem is not the object with which they choose to kill. The problem is the underlying motivation to commit violence. Plus you are just plain wrong. Far more people use firearms to defend themselves, most of them never firing a shot, then there are people who go around shooting other people up. The reality is that defensive uses of firearms are reported far less than when firearms are used to kill innocents. Also, fear of firearms is so visceral that any story of defensive use is met with dissonance and derision anyway.

Some people are just so dumb they can't do anything without causing harm to their children or loved ones. Whether it's a mom roasting a baby in the car, or little Junior shooting his sister with a shotgun, or whatever nightmare scenario you might imagine with a chain saw, it comes down to parents not being up to the task.

You can't cure stupid.
