Are any of the "humanity" points I lose for the guns made up for by the fact that I've been working with kids in foster care and group homes for the past seven years? What about the fact that I donated to both my local NPR affiliate and DU? Or that sometimes, at the dog park, I pick up the poop from other dogs just to help out? Do I lose more because I speed sometimes, or gain them back because I'm scrupulous about going slowly through school zones?

Isn't painting gun owners as monsters getting passe yet? I know that it's only one part of my life. I part I think is important to protect, but still only a part.

I bet that I'm not the only gun owner out there who doesn't fit in the pigeon hole that we're so often crammed into.
I bet that the anti's won't care....cause we haz teh gunz!!

I'm sorry. I know that this is a great generalization of people I've pigeon holed with the term "anti," even though I complain about it being done to pro-gun folks. I'm not perfect. I'm just sick of people assuming they know something about gun owners- and thinking it's something bad, at that- simply because we're gun owners.

Or at least not unwarranted defensiveness. He's illustrating a point that the picture many people in the anti-gun movement paint of your typical gun owner is not an accurate one in the least, and that we are just as human as they are. Basically, you're trying to say that because he thinks those people are wrong and wants to show them, he must feel guilty about his gun ownership, which simply makes no sense in the least.

I promise, I had no intention of using my pup as a shield. The whole point of using pictures was, however, designed to make visual a point that pro-gun folks have been trying to explain in words for ages with no luck. The pictures of my girlfriend, my dog...they were just pictures of other interests that I have. They represent other sides of me than "the gun owner."

Would it have worked better for you if I'd just posted pics of other activities, and not gone for something "cute" or "soft" or however you see the pup pictures as being?

I think that range of pictures demonstrates sides other than "typical" guy stuff. I could have made it all pictures of bungee jumping and whitewater rafting and swimming with sharks and climbing things and riding elephants; but I thought it would have been cocky and a little overly formulaic.

Closest I've ever been to a predator as large as I am. Of course, I was the only tourist in the water with a knife, but it's not my element, so I was still at an enormous disadvantage, had the shark pressed the point. He didn't. He was apparently fat and happy, and just swam on by.

the ladder-style covers actually do just fine, for me anyway. If you haven't tried them, the "rungs" are raised just above the level of the teeth of the quad rail.

I took the grip pod off though. It's got a quick release and it's great to pop on if I'm sitting at the bench, but for standing I took some advice from a guy with loads more experience than me and now I just hold the mag well. (not the magazine)

is marked corrosive, you should be alright shooting pretty much anything, and since the only corrosive stuff sold these days comes out of eastern Europe with old Soviet marking on it, you should be alright. Just remember to clean regularly and keep that sucker lubed up. Remember to stick with a bullet weight appropriate to your barrel twist.

I wanted to have some on hand in case it got even more scarce. It actually wasn't too bad a price, and I should have bought more- even reloads are over a dollar a round now; here in Sarasota, anyway.

As far as performance- haven't had any issues. I don't get to enjoy those multiple-100's-of-rounds-at-the-range-days anymore with these prices so I haven't really put it to an endurance test, but the short answer to your question is: I like it just fine. No guarantees, of course, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Especially if it's on sale.

I love doxie's. My boyhood dog was a doxie. We're coming up on a year since we had to put him down after he developed cancer and was just in terrible pain. I tell ya that's a pain that just doesn't seem to fully go away.

.. 9 years of phenobarbitol for 'idiopathic seizure disorder' took a toll on his liver and it was expanding, putting pressure on his lungs and stomach. We had to have him put to sleep this spring.

....and that doesn't change as they get older :) It's shocking how much a part of your life they can become. For me, as an only child that was home a lot from school because of illness, my dog was very much my best friend. Having to take him into the vet to put him to sleep was the most difficult thing I've ever had to do in my life, which I'm sure you understand.

reviving an old thread, guys! I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed looking at the pictures again and laughed out loud at the Austin Powers reference.

Euro- thanks for the compliment! I can't claim to have "built" the entire rifle; but I did buy it as a stripped lower with an LPK (from a local company called Anvil Arms- GREAT guys!), and Magpul goodies for the grip, ladder rail covers, and stock (and, now, for the BUS too!). The upper I got in one piece, didn't want to mess with headspacing, etc., on my first build. Did not want to see this: :nuke: :evilfrown:

Putting it together was a blast (no pun intended), real fun little project. Once she was up and running, I had the YHM forearm replaced with a lighter one from Daniel Defense, and a piston system from a company called PWS installed.

That last one was a little bit silly (given the amount that I shoot), but I like it. And with all that, it was still about $1500 cheaper than the LWRC I'd been drooling over for a year before I decided to put one together myself.

It really was an amazing jump. And if you haven't done one yourself, let me tell you that it is WAY scarier than skydiving (which, to be honest, isn't really "scary," just nerve-wracking as you wonder the whole way to the door what the fuck you were thinking when you paid good money for this ;) ).

However, if you're into this kind of stuff, I highly recommend doing it once.
(I never intend to do it again. Personally, feels like a rapidly diminishing return after the first-time "HOLY SHIT" factor.)

Also, thanks for the picture of your boy! I think I recall that perhaps your family has some more challenges than most to deal with; and that picture makes it crystal clear that you guys are doing an absolutely wonderful job.
