| He brought a knife, she had a gun. |

A Gwinnett County woman shot and killed Puentes Wednesday morning after the knife-wielding man attacked her in the shower, police said. "She responded to the deadly threat with deadly force," http://www.ajc.com/news/gwinnett/police-id-slain-home-942224.html

| 3. I hate that our society worships guns, but this is the sort of thing |
|
that makes me glad that people can have them if they know how to use them and to store them responsibly. My gripe with the gun lobby is the resistance to any sort of requirement for training an testing to ensure ability. We have to prove we know how to drive before we are permitted to drive a car. Sure, some people drive a car without a license or with a suspended license, but most people don't, and the laws that require us to have a license reduce the potential for car-related mayhem on the roads.
Similarly, if we required licensing for guns, I am quite sure that a lot of bad or careless people would still get and use guns even without a license, but in general, people would get the training they needed to use & store guns responsibly, and we would read about far fewer terrible accidents of the sort caused by someone not knowing how to use a gun properly or not realizing how one should be stored to preent tragedy when there is a child in the house.
I also think laws that strictly control assault weapons are wise, for the same reason that not everyone is allowed to hop into the cab of an 18-wheeler and drive down the street!

| 19. Gun worship is a phrase used to describe those who love guns |
|
Gun worshippers don't just see guns as tools, they admire them for their aesthetic qualities, they feel empowered by them, they love talking about them, bragging about them, extolling their virtues, carrying them everywhere they go, comparing them with other gun lovers, discussing their merits, their fire power, their capacity, their barrel lengths, their size, their ease of concealment, their ability to level the playing/killing field and praying to them that they will come through in their hour of need.
Now I'm sure nobody around here feels that way. Everyone here is as normal as the lady in the story. She kept her gun in the bedroom and used it as a tool to kill a vicious attacker. That was a very appropriate use of a gun. She didn't love or worship the gun, or she would have had it in the shower with her.

...minus the "praying" and "killing field" part with many other gun owners (in fact, I've never talked to another gun owner and had them mention how a certain firearm levels the "playing/killing field"). I think this makes me an enthusiast, not a "worshiper." I have many similar discussions about computers, aircraft, computers and several other topics I'm interested in. I don't think I worship computers because I know a lot about them and have conversations about them with other computer enthusiast. No, this whole "worshiper" thing is a load of made up bullshit to try and belittle knowledgeable gun owners and CCW permit holders.
But hey, nice try though.
EDIT: Oh, and you have no idea about the rest of the details about this woman. For all you know, she could be a CCW permit holder, or a competitive or recreational shooter, or just a general firearms enthusiast.

|
Why are you so defensive? I was explaining what it meant. Trying to answer a question. Then here you come, jumping in with all kinds of irrelevancies. What's that all about? I'm not suggesting that anyone on DU is one of these nutjobs. There are lots of rational people who are gun enthusiasts who enjoy target shooting, skeet shooting and hunting. I was referring to a whole other breed. The freaks who never go anywhere without at least one gun and who amass personal arsenals, preparing to fight off the US government or the hordes of aliens and thugs, and live in bunkers. I'm sure you're not one of them. You're correct about the lady. I don't know and I assume, neither do you. She may even be a worshiper. Who knows? All I do know is that she conducted herself appropriately in the situation and I'm glad she is OK. I wish her well

Her attacker might well have went on to create even more morally superior women. Fortunately he will not have that chance.

who are using them for good or evil.
Legitimate self defense with a firearm, which means stopping an attack by a person who plans to inflict serious injury or to kill, is an example of the good use of a firearm.
If you killed or injured an attacker in legitimate self defense using martial arts skills or a knife would your martial arts skills or your knife be evil?
I suspect and hope your post was an example of sarcasm. Sometimes in this forum it's hard to tell unless the poster uses the sarcasm thingy.
