Original message
Wayne LaPierre just told me that the UN wants to take away my guns.
So the NRA just called my business line with a message from Wayne (I have a similar last name as an old local RWer so I often get calls assuming they are talking to one of their believers).
According to Wayne, the UN is meeting "right here in New York" to discuss further ways to take away my guns just like they did in Canada, England, and Australia.

Then one of Wayne's "associates" got on the line and asked if I was concerned about the issues Wayne raised...

Me: "No"

Associate: "What?"

pause...

Associate: "Do the issues Wayne raised concern you?"

Me: "Nope"

Associate: "Oh, um. Thank you for taking our survey."

24. Actually, they've been working that one for the past five years or so
Pretty much since the whole Programme of Action on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons got started, and certain parties have been trying to use it as a backdoor to get registration of privately owned firearms imposed in the US. That's not to say, however, that the claims made by the NRA leadership aren't wildly overblown.

secret 10 point plan to take away grandpa's shotgun? NRA, fear mongers.

More like NRA Board member Grover Norquist is trying to take away grandpa's SS and Medicare.

kind of ruins that sales campaign.

9. Every person in America, children too, could own TWO guns with the number sold
to the gunnies, and enough ammo to fully supply WWII all over.

And this douche wants to stroke the fires more?

I see, no facts when it comes to gun issues, just stupid statements based on ignorance and emotion.

18. The NRA is a large national organization
They often concern themselves with issues that are at the national (or international) level. The UN would shut down legal gun ownership if they could so the issue is valid.

With the current economic crisis going on, the UN should be defunded.

25. Let's get it clear "the UN" isn't a monolithic entity
The very name "United Nations" should be indicative of that; there are almost two hundred member states, each trying to use the channels and organs of the UN to pursue the interests of its own government. Some of them might indeed want to "shut down legal gun ownership" but the Programme of Action/Arms Trade Treaty is a minor component of the UN's total activities.

33. Always bear in mind the primary purpose of the UN is to (help) prevent another World War
So far, it's performed that function for over 60 years.

Speaking as former staff member, I'll be the first to acknowledge there's lots to dislike about the UN, not least the fact that every member government is out to protect its own interests, which not only means they're (as you so aptly put it) a herd of cats, but it's damn hard to get them to Do The Right Thing even when it's perfectly obvious what The Right Thing is.

31. Remember when all the cheap high quality South African ammo went away...

The UN and NGOs opposed to small arms proliferation pressure countries to destroy rather than sell off to the private sector in other countries like the US.
