GUNS IN THE NEWS - June 29, 2004

Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

1. Belgrade man arrested, allegedly threatened woman with a gun (MT)

"Officers arrested a Belgrade man Friday after he allegedly threatened a woman with a gun and intentionally crashed his truck with her and her child inside.
William Drake Campbell, 26, faces two felony counts of criminal endangerment and one count of misdemeanor theft.
The charges stem from an accident report on Rocky Mountain Road at about 11 p.m., Friday. That's when a caller reported that a woman was standing on the side of the road next to a disabled car yelling that a man was trying to kill her and her baby."

2. Man charged in weekend slaying (NC)

"Police arrested one man and are searching for another in connection with a Sunday morning shooting that led to the death a 23-year-old Zebulon man.
Howard Pierce, 26, was charged Monday with being an accessory after the fact in the death of Leonard Bland, according to court documents.
Pierce drove Jermaine Johnson away from the homicide scene in a 2004 Chrysler, according to officials and court documents. Police are searching for Johnson and issued a warrant for his arrest, alleging he killed Bland."

Deadly robbery attempt in Groton

Groton -- Police are investigating a robbery at a Dairy Queen on Fort Hill Road that turned deadly after the store owner surprised the robber with a gun.

Police say two people left the restaurant by ambulance early Monday morning but only one person survived the altercation.

Dairy Queen employees say that the owner was inside the shop alone after closing when someone broke the lock on the back fence and used a crow bar to break in the backdoor. Store manager Ann Venito said her boss shot and killed the intruder.

"They hit Steven in the head three times, but Steven still got him though,"said Venito.

4. $1 million bail each for teens (WA)

"Larry Kloes took his girlfriend's troubled son under his wing -- offering fatherly advice, taking him snowmobiling, even picking him up when he stole a car and drove to Denver.
The 15-year-old repaid him by stealing his truck and breaking into a family vacation cabin to party with friends.
After Kloes pressed charges, the boy, who spent two days in jail for those crimes, persuaded two friends to help kill him, according to court documents released yesterday.
He decided to get out of the house when he saw the 15-year-old making a silencer for the handgun. Kloes was sitting on the couch, telling them to take the stolen things, call him an ambulance and leave, he said.
When the pair exited, the 18-year-old was carrying the handgun, which had blood on the silencer, he told police. The 15-year-old commented that he couldn't kill Kloes, according to the probable cause statements."

5. Dog found at Mt. Tabor with multiple gunshot wounds (OR)

More "decent Americans" in action...

"A hiker walking along a path at Mt. Tabor Park over the weekend ended up finding a badly injured dog that a veterinarian would later discover had been shot several times.
At first, the hiker thought perhaps the dog had been hit by a car or maybe attacked by some other animal.
However, when the dog was taken to a veterinarian, a surprising discovery was made.
"The vet came back and said that it had been shot multiple times with a shotgun and then a .22 in the leg," Ted Imel, a friend of the hiker, told KATU News.
The dog still has bullets in the elbow of his right front leg, which was broken. "

6. Arnold: Man shot in robbery (PA)

"A Penn Hills man was in critical condition yesterday after being shot on a Westmoreland County street during a robbery attempt.
The 34-year-old victim, who was not identified, was shot once in the back as he tried to run from two assailants, Arnold police Chief Joseph Doutt said.
Police responding to a call for a man down at 1:21 a.m. found the victim lying face down, but conscious and alert, at 14th Street and Fourth Avenue. "

7. KC Police Investigate Shooting

"Kansas City police are investigating a shooting that took place in the 5400 block of Michigan.
Before police arrived at the scene, one victim had left. The person turned up a few minutes later at a local hospital with serious injuries. Police said a second person might have been injured in the incident as well. "

9. Police Capture Tenn. Shooting Suspect

"COLUMBIA, Tenn. - A man suspected of shooting his ex-wife and their daughter to death and wounding his son was caught Monday as he fled from a vacant house, authorities said.
Parker Ray Elliott, 42, was captured by police acting on a tip from a nearby resident, said Maury County Chief Deputy Raymond Ashley Brown. The vacant house was about 10 miles from where the shootings took place.
Police say Elliott forced his way inside ex-wife Freda Elliott's house Thursday night and shot her, his 18-year-old daughter, Rachel, and his 15-year-old son, Seth. "

10. Gilmanton man charged for firing gun at van (NH)

"GILMANTON — A local man has been charged with reckless conduct for allegedly firing a shotgun at a van as it left a party at his residence.
Heath Decato, 22, of 172 Potter Farm Road was arrested after he turned himself in to police yesterday afternoon at the Belmont Police Station.
Decato — who is currently free on $5,000 personal recognizance bail — is being charged with reckless conduct, a Class B felony punishable by 3½-7 years in prison."

11. Man kills wife in N.Y., self in Pa.

"VAN ETTEN | An Athens, Pa., man apparently shot his wife to death at their Van Etten summer residence Sunday and then drove to Ridgebury Township, Bradford County, Pa., before turning the shotgun on himself.
According to reports from the Chemung County Sheriff's Department, Carol L. Daniels, 60, of Paine Street, Athens, Pa., was found dead with a single shotgun wound to the head outside a residence on Beckhorn Hollow Road.
Athens, Pa., Borough Police Department officers had been sent to the residence to inform her that her husband, Denny M. Daniels, 60, had been found dead in Ridgebury Township, the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. "

12. Police: Man Shot In Face, Spits Out Bullet (TX)

"SAN ANTONIO -- A 37-year-old man was shot late Monday following an argument with another man over a woman.
Police said the two men were arguing over the victim's sister in the 200 block of F Street when the woman's boyfriend allegedly shot the victim in the face with a .22-caliber handgun.
San Antonio Police Department Lt. Brian Head said the bullet entered the victim's right cheek and went into his mouth."

13. Chiefs call for ban on rifle used in Birmingham officers' deaths

"The rifle believed used in the recent slayings of three Birmingham police officers would be illegal under a bill now before Congress, a move supported by some of Alabama's top law officers in the wake of the deaths.
"It's a military weapon all day long," Montgomery police Chief John Wilson said Monday of the SKS, a semiautomatic rifle whose rounds can penetrate the protective vests worn by most police officers. "That's all it is, and it needs to be used for nothing more than that."
But while Wilson and Mobile police Chief Sam Cochran said the SKS and similar semiautomatic rifles should not be available to the general public, Alabama's U.S. senators and others in the congressional delegation historically have opposed gun-control measures.
Gun-control advocates say the SKS, a Soviet-made rifle that preceded the AK-47, is the semiautomatic rifle most often used against police officers. Authorities in Birmingham have said it was used in the June 17 killings of officers Robert "Bob" Bennett, Harley Chisholm III and Carlos Owen."

14. Shooting victim had experience with guns, family says (NY)

"BROADALBIN - As a gift for his grandson's 18th birthday, Victor Passino gave Mark Passino a rifle so the two could spend time hunting together.
The rifle, a .22-caliber, was Mark's first real gun, and last.
A week after his June 14 birthday, Mark was killed when the rifle discharged a bullet into his chest, following what investigators say was an accident during a weapon exchange with his cousin, 16-year-old Justin Hill.
The two teenagers had been target practicing inside an old school bus behind Mark's Ridge Road home."

15. Milwaukee Police Officer Shoots Man In Leg

"MILWAUKEE -- A 47-year-old Milwaukee man will likely face charges after pointing a rifle at police early Sunday night.
Police said they responded to a call about shots fired at Teutonia and Eggert Place.
The caller said a person was talking about suicide.
When police arrived, the man opened the door with a rifle in his hand.
The officers said they ordered him to drop it. When the man refused the offer, an officer shot the man twice, once in each leg."

16. Passing Driver Prevents Woman's Abduction (FL)

"A passing driver helped save a 19-year-old woman from being abducted by a man who was carrying a loaded gun, a knife and a pair of gloves in his car, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
Edwine Jean was walking home from Wal-Mart in Pompano Beach when a man in a black Chevrolet Impala pulled up next to her and threatened to use a gun if she refused to get in his car, sheriff's investigators said.
The man, Marvis Permenter, 20, had gotten out of the car and was trying to push Jean into it when Latoya Mosley heard Jean scream and stopped her car to help.
Jean jumped into Mosley's vehicle and they fled, calling sheriff's officials as Permenter followed them. "

17. Video Shows Teens Shooting Pellet Gun At Strangers (CA)

"Three Southern California teens were arrested after authorities found a videotape of them shooting a pellet gun at strangers.
Officers searched a sport utility vehicle belonging to one of the boys' parents and found a marijuana pipe, an air-powered pellet pistol, camera and videotape, police said.
The tapes were apparently made by the teens over a period of several days in Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Lawndale and Torrance.
They clearly show the boys shooting at moving cars and people standing on the street. The group referred to the pranks as "midnight mayhem." "

18. Police: Midtown Shooting Apparent Random Act (CA)

"Sacramento police are investigating a shooting that killed a woman near a midtown freeway onramp.
The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. Sunday at 29th and N streets near the onramp to Highway 99.
Police said a group of people from Vallejo had just left the nearby Blue Cue bar, when they were confronted by a several men in another vehicle while waiting at a traffic light.
One of the people in the other car pointed a gun at the victim's car and opened fire, killing 26-year-old Marissa Ann Flores Krog."

19. Argument Leads To Shooting, Police Say (OH)

"The shooting happened at 11:40 a.m. in the 700 block of Mulberry Street in Lincoln Heights, WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported.
Tyrone Jackson, 48, was shot once in the stomach, according to police. He was taken to University Hospital, and he is expected to recover from his injuries, WLWT reported.
Police said Jackson was seen standing in the street arguing with the suspect, who was in his minivan, before the suspect allegedly fired and drove away. "

20. Man killed attempting to rob USO fundraiser (OH)

Liberal Calssic brought this story to my attention in the "challenge" thread. Although it does show how a gun was used to thwart a robbert attempt, the gun was fired by an armed security guard; essentially, this is similar to someone getting shot by a cop, IMHO.

And it's interesting that yet another shooting occurs in the Buckeye State, where they pretty much want every Tom, Dick and Harry to be abot to pack heat. - Wayne

Man killed attempting to rob USO fundraiser

AKRON -- A fundraiser for American troops overseas became the target of armed robbers in Akron.

During the incident early Monday morning, a security guard shot and killed one of the thieves.

Akron police tell us that the two men showed up at a Las Vegas Night fundraiser for the USO.

One of them tried to jump the counter where the money was kept. Then he aimed his gun at the security guard.

Police say that's when the guard shot and killed the robber.
