Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.

Wagener man charged with murder in weekend shooting

Police charged a Wagener man Tuesday morning in the weekend shooting death of a Batesburg-Leesville man.

Earl Laveris Nicholas, 21, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Nicholas was riding in a vehicle with four other individuals that stopped on Lynwood Street to drop off two passengers, Clare said.

When the car stopped, a fight broke out between one of the departing passengers and someone on the street. The passenger climbed back into the vehicle and it sped away. Nicholas then fired shots out the window, hitting Fuller in the head, Clare said.

Detroit — (06/30/04)-- Police say a shooting on Detroit's east side left three people dead and another three wounded.

Deputy Chief Ronald Haddad says the shooting happened after two women were fighting and one of them returned with a man. Shots were then fired, hitting six people.

Haddad says a woman who was shot in the knee and a man who was shot in the chest were taken to a local hospital for treatment. They are listed in critical condition. The two appeared to be innocent bystanders.

Seeking to build more trust between police and city residents, Boston police plan to take the unusual step today of sharing with community leaders the preliminary findings of the department's investigation into Sunday's police shooting of a Roxbury man.

The early-morning shooting on Blue Hill Avenue left 40-year-old Bert W. Bowen dead, and neighbors have offered accounts of the encounter that conflict sharply with the version given by police. The neighbors, who said they witnessed the shooting, said the man was unarmed, but police have said he pointed a .40 caliber handgun at the two officers who had pulled him over for a traffic violation. The gun was recovered at the scene, police said.

Police last night identified the two patrolmen involved in the shooting: James R. Sheehan, 30, who joined the force in 2001, and Brian Smigielski, 31,who joined the department in 1999. The officers could not be immediately reached last night, but police spokeswoman Beverly Ford said the two men, who have been placed on administrative duty, have excellent records. She said the preliminary report on the case is to be shared today.

With Police Commissioner Kathleen M. O'Toole's promising to make the department open and transparent to the community, Superintendent Paul Joyce, who is in charge of department investigations, is expected to disclose the findings at a weekly anticrime meeting at the Ella J. Baker House, headquarters of the antiviolence organization led by Rev. Eugene Rivers III.

Kevin Sutton of Longmont is accused of shooting an acquaintance in the head during an argument.

The youngest Lotto jackpot winner ever in Colorado is behind bars and faces a charge of attempted murder after Longmont police said he shot another man in the head over the weekend.

Kevin Sutton, 26, was arrested after a shooting at his home late Saturday, said Longmont police Cmdr. Craig Earhart. The man he allegedly shot, Cristobal Lopez, 40, was treated and released; the bullet pierced his scalp at the temple.

"It never penetrated the skull," Earhart said. "He was lucky."

Lopez on Tuesday said he was still in pain but had just learned Sutton was a lottery winner.

"The bullet went a quarter-inch past my eye, but here I am. The Lord was on my side," Lopez said. "Now I'm going to be talking to a lawyer. I'm going to get every penny I can out of him, dry him out."

Authorities charged a 40-year-old man with shooting his wife Tuesday after he chased her out of a dry cleaners in quiet Crozet.

Wendy Brown, 34, was treated at the University of Virginia Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the hip and later released, a hospital official said.

Albemarle County police charged her husband, Herbert Thomas Brown, 40, of Batesville, with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, Sgt. James Bond said.

WELLINGTON -- The shooting of a 31-year-old man during a domestic dispute on Sunday was the second time someone was struck by a bullet in the village in the past three years.

Crimes involving guns are rare in Wellington, but when they do happen, they are typically connected to a family fight, according to police. Even most robberies are strong-arm attacks and don't involve guns, said Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Capt. Gregory Richter.

"When we do have violence, it's going to be centered around a domestic situation more than likely," Richter said.

That's what happened in the most recent shooting. Deputies say Louis McPherson, 55, apparently shot his daughter's boyfriend twice after the boyfriend struck the daughter. The sheriff's office is still trying to determine whether McPherson should be charged or if he fired in self-defense, Richter said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 32-year-old Westside woman died overnight after being shot during an argument at a gas station late Monday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says two women were arguing outside the GP Discount at Melvin and Ricker Roads just before 10 p.m. when one of the women pulled a gun and shot Lavonia Graham in the head.

Police have not talked about the nature of the relationship between the Graham and the woman who shot her or what they were arguing about.

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) - A Mexican boxing champion beat up and hospitalized a gunman who shot at him outside a gym in a crime-plagued city on the U.S. border.

Prosecutors in Ciudad Juarez said a man armed with two pistols shot at light-heavyweight champion Arturo "The Graduate" Rivera as he left the gym early Monday.

Rivera, a stocky brawler with 16 knockouts from a 26-fight career and ranked 98th in the world, fought back with his fists and the attacker was treated in hospital for head injuries.

A 2-year-old boy shot in the upper torso with a .38-caliber handgun in the 4200 block of Carroll Lane earlier this week was reported in stable condition Tuesday following surgery at Driscoll Children's Hospital.

The boy's father was cleaning the handgun and went outside with his brother and other adults when the shooting took place at about 9:20 p.m. Monday, police said.

"We suspect that a 3-year-old male cousin fired the weapon," said Cmdr. Mike Walsh, in charge of Corpus Christi police investigations.

There are varying reports from witnesses who rushed inside the home when they heard the gunshot, Walsh said.

One witness told police the cousin was screaming and holding the gun in his hand, according to police reports. Another account from a witness indicated the boy was screaming but the gun was on the floor.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Three people were shot on Monday in seperate incidents surrounding one man's funeral services.

In the first melee Monday morning, two men were shot outside a funeral home, just before services were to be held for former murder suspect Aaron Roundtree. Later in the day, a woman was shot as a wake was being held for Roundtree at his grandmother's home.

The first shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. at Mrs. J.W. Jones Memorial Chapel, located at 10th Street and Ann.

Police think the shooting outside the funeral home was not premeditated. A simple argument may have escalated to gunplay, KMBC's Tom Corvin reported.

With all the spyware and adware out there, many people are reluctant to subscribe to web sites, fearing that they will get inundated with pop-ups and spam. I figured we should let people know about a site's subscription requirements so they can decide for themselves.

I use Google for my news searches, and it indicates when a stie is a subscription site. Many stories also provide links to alternate sites, and occasionally those are non-subscription sites. For example, the Kansas City funeral story I posted above had three subscription site links for it, and one non-subscription link. I used the non-subscription link.

KMBC's Brenda Washington reported that Kennith Sanford, 21, was shot in a silver Pontiac around 1:30 a.m. Sanford drove to Third Street and Troup, to the Juniper Garden Apartments, and crashed into a fence. He died at the scene.

"Carter County law enforcement officers shot and killed a county man Monday night in front of his home while responding to a report of a domestic disturbance. The man reportedly pointed a shotgun at officers when they arrived and refused to disarm.
  Michael David Hoss, 55, 189 Hilton Hill Rd., was pronounced dead at the scene after he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.
  According to the Carter County Sheriff's Department, at approximately 10:20 p.m., CCSD officers went to the residence on Hilton Hill Road on a report of a domestic violence incident in which a male was armed with a shotgun. While the officers were en route to the scene, dispatchers with the 911 Communications Center told them the caller reported that shots had been fired into the residence and that a female and a small child were still inside."

"A 13-year-old boy was killed Tuesday night in a drive-by shooting believed to be gang-related, Metro Police said.

Rachel died at the scene, while Freda Elliott died Saturday at a Nashville hospital. Seth was originally in critical condition but has improved."

"A man was shot by a member of a drug task force searching a residence in West Mifflin last night.
The task force, made up of federal, county and local police, went to the 200 block of Belmont Avenue with a search warrant just after 7 p.m.
A release from the federal postal inspection service said two people were quickly removed from the residence but James Nodd Jr., 35, was found in a back bedroom. The press release said Nodd pointed a gun at officers and refused to drop it.
A postal inspector shot Nodd in the upper leg and groin."

"A Milwaukee woman was in very critical condition Wednesday afternoon after robbers shot her as she tried to run away. It happened around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday at 20th and Walnut in Milwaukee.
Police said a 48-year-old woman and her husband were moving in the early morning and were in their truck when three men confronted them at gunpoint.
"They took the victim's vehicle. They took money from the victim and some other items of property, and the victim's at an area hospital right now," Milwaukee police Lt. Scott Lang said. "

Police confirmed that two men -- ages 21 and 22 -- were shot. They were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

"A man and woman died of gunshot wounds last night on the Catonsville campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in an incident that police said was a murder-suicide.
Police did not release the names of the dead - a 31-year-old man and 27-year-old woman - but confirmed that the woman was a graduate student at UMBC.
The gunfire brought students and campus visitors rushing to Hilltop Circle near the school's gym to find the gruesome aftermath: the bloodied bodies sprawled on their backs, just a few feet from each other, in the street near rows of parked vehicles. "
