| Applied for my Ohio CCW this morning. |
|
Went down to the Butler county Sheriffs office, filled out the forms and paid my $45.
As it turns out, there were 6 other people in line in front of me doing the same thing. Interesting mix to, 1 elderly man, 1 "soccer mom", several middle aged white guys, a clean cut guy in a suit, and a mid 30's black man (me).
I chatted with the deputy about his carry gun and my choice of firearm. All quite friendly.
Took me only slightly longer than getting my drivers license renewed, although I will have to wait two weeks for the ccw to be processed.
Ironically, this evening Im in an area that is just the "opposite" of what I went through this morning. Im here in Chicago on business where just being a gun owning resident is enough put one in prison.
Thought Id post, because I found it strangely odd, that within the space of a few hours, I've gone from a place that considers gun ownership a fundamental right, to one that considers it heinous criminality.

I'm from Ohio and I moved to the west coast about three years ago. For a long time, concealed carry was illegal in Ohio. I'm glad you have the option now.
I have no regrets. I carry every day. I don't know if you're familiar with this forum, but the idea that one can be a liberal but also be pro-gun is incomprehensible to some people here. Believe me...it's possible. Let me know if I can give any suggestions about concealed carry.

And only two weeks to process the permit? Sounds pretty efficient to me. Here in Virginia they have 45 days to process the paperwork..and they use 'em all.

but I have no problem if you think you do. personally I collect military style fireamrs so the AWB ending is important to me. the line you waited in described a fair representation of the public, which is what normal gun owners are.

There are many here in Missouri that don't feel a need to "Carry", but support those that would exercise that right. The rider that came along with the new law, was the fact the a person can now have a loaded pistol legally concealed in their vehicle, without the need for any kind of permit. My wife & daughter have no interest in carrying a gun on their person, but feel much more secure while driving alone and have a loaded gun in the glove compartment.
>>>DISCLAIMER<<< Both my wife and daughter are fully trained on their respective guns.

Congrats on getting your ccw!
As my dad always says about guns: Better to have one and not need it, than to need one and not have it.

What's the deadly-force law like there in Ohio?
I'm curious because we've got a CC permit system now in the state where I live, but the law on use of deadly force is so ambiguously worded nobody knows what it means. (Or rather it means what a judge and/or jury can be convinced it means, depending as usual on things like how good a lawyer you can afford, how hot the prosecutor is to notch up a conviction, social and economic status and family connections of shooter and shootee, etc.)
It seems to me a pretty dubious idea to carry a gun when you're not sure whether you're allowed to use it, but a lot of people are doing it.
On the other hand a couple of neighboring states have very clear, and I think reasonable, deadly-force laws, as well as CCW licensing, which would seem a more logical situation.
And so as I say I'm curious about Ohio, which I know nothing about except that you've got some frightening rednecks down in the southeast corner. When you get your permit and carry your piece, are you going to be able to use it if need be, or will you have to call your lawyer for an opinion first?

Boiling it down, you must be in legitimate fear for your life and have no viable means of retreat. You cant use deadly force to protect property.
Also there is no duty to retreat from your home.

I applied in Hamilton County in April, the week after the law went into effect. I didn't see any other applicants, because Hamilton county was -- and I assume still is -- taking appointments. I was the mid (to late) 30's black man in a suit. I got a call within a week that my license was ready. Other than the silly appointment process, the entire process was smooth and everyone was polite and professional.

The great thing about the CCW laws is that it allows those that feel a need for it..have it. If you feel no need to carry deadly protection, then you're not effected by the law. Although I have my permit, I don't always carry my gun on my person (but it's always in the car or truck). Like the various insurance programs that I have, I know it's there if needed.
