Israeli Arab charged with transporting Haifa suicide bomber

An Israeli Arab from the northern town of Umm al-Fahm was charged Monday with having driven the female suicide bomber to the crowded Maxim restaurant in Haifa last month, where she later blew herself up, killing 21 people.

The two then stopped to eat at the restaurant, at the southern outskirts of Haifa. Mahnaje said that they then ate together, and that Jawadat waited to detonate the bomb that she secretly carried until Mahnaje had exited the restaurant.

The investigation showed that her original intent had been to blow herself up at one of the two hospitals, eventually choosing the packed restaurant as her target.

Security officials believe she decided against carrying out the attack at the Hadera hospital because of the security arrangements in place there.

This kind of occupation, transporting illegal workers, is against Israeli law. So the man says that although he was suspicious, he didn't know her intentions. By pressing the law in this case, more potential violators will be warned.

When a decent petty crook, providing a needed community service, gets caught up in matters well above his accustomed violations. There were several dealers in false identifications over here, who had the misfortune to provide documents to some who participated in the attack on New York two years ago, clearly without any knowledge of the signifigance of what they did. They received rather stiff sentences, and seem figures of some small sympathy to my view; there is something in the nature of an industrial accident about it....
