Israel expropriates Palestinian land in order to legalize West Bank settlement

For the first time in three years, the state has confiscated uncultivated land in the West Bank. The land will be used to legalize a nearby settlement outpost.

Last week, acting on orders from the government, the Civil Administration declared 189 dunams of land belonging to the Palestinian village of Karyut to be state land, so as to retroactively legalize houses and a road in the Hayovel neighborhood of the settlement of Eli. This would seem to violate Israel's long-standing commitment to the United States not to expropriate Palestinian lands for settlement expansion.

Yet another good reason for the US to abstain from vetoing the statehood vote. Pity it probably won't happen.

An Ottoman land law dating from 1858 allows uncultivated land to be declared state land. This law, which is still in force in the West Bank, is what was used to carry out the expropriation.

Declaring something state land means that the country in question is claiming sovereignty over that land....

residing in the West Bank.

If they insist on having their cake, then they're going to have to eat it (and will eat it eventually, one way or another).

In other words, this action is a tacit admission that they consider the West Bank to be part of the State of Isreal. Having made such a tacit admission, they need to acknowledge and respect ALL of their citizens.

9. Have to say, the PA played a blinder by asking israel to define its border before they would decide

whether or not to recognise it. Israel refusing to do so is a clear proof that israel are not satisfied with having somebody elses lands handed to them.

This typo pretty clearly represents some type of bigotry.

Let's see, "ain't" is usually associated with Southern dialect. Maybe this is an indication of bigotry against Southerners. :shrug:

6. From 2009:Eli settlement builds infrastructure during government transistion

Settlers in the West Bank colony of Eli have been building a road in between the settlement another nearby. This is being done on the lands of the Palestinian village of Qaryut and taking advantage of the transition of governments bewteen the outgoing Olmert regime and the incoming Netanyahu government to build the road, which is against Israeli law. The Mayor of Qaryut today filed a petition to the Israeli High Court in an attempt to halt the construction.
