NEW YORK - US President Barack Obama made it clear to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in their meeting Wednesday that the US will veto a UN recognition proposal if left with no other choice, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said in a press briefing.

Obama met Abbas after giving a speech at the General Assembly where he rejected Palestinian plans to seek UN recognition for statehood and expressed unwavering commitment to Israel. This was the first time the two had met since February

Meanwhile, the Israeli delegation to the General Assembly expressed satisfaction on Wednesday after the first day of the international gathering in New York.

would need to veto, but I am not sure. Until the smoke settles it is hard to say what will happen.

activity surrounding yesterday to avoid that. None of it good for the Palestinians imo.

4. It was clear from the start that the US would veto the SC resolution.

Absolutely nothing has changed. This was the situation that the PA faced going into their effort. Palestine will receive lesser recognition from the General Assembly and full recognition from many nations. The obstruction to normalization of Palestine will continue, but it will continue as an increasingly isolated and illegal effort to prevent the two state solution that all parties have agreed is the correct solution.

It is so pro-Israel that Canada will vote in the United Nations against recognizing a Palestinian state on only half the land that Canadian diplomats promised Palestine sixty years ago.

It is so pro-Israel that it will support illegal settlers and the extreme right in blocking this small step towards righting a historical wrong despite Canada spending tens of millions of dollars on training Palestinian police and other “state-building” measures.

It is so pro-Israel that it will do this despite a higher percentage of Canadians supporting the Palestinian Authority’s bid for UN membership than voted Conservative in the last election.
