South Sudan slams Hamas PM’s remark, demands apology

October 6, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Republic of South Sudan has strongly censured remarks in which Ismail Haniya, Prime Minister of the ousted Hamas’s government in Gaza strip, reportedly described the newly independent country as “a foundling state.”

According to a report published by the daily Sudanese newspaper Al-Ahdath last week, Haniya was delivering a Friday prayer sermon on 30 October when he described South Sudan as a “foundling state” as he strongly advocated the view that Palestinians should seek to establish their state through armed struggle not at the UN General Assembly.

“We have not heard in history that states were established through international resolutions, even this foundling state in South Sudan, which was severed from Sudan’s main homeland, did not come to exist through a UN resolution but rather through fighting and agreements,” he was quoted.

Haniya further said that establishing a Palestinian state with its capital Jerusalem is the goal of all Palestinian people, stressing that it is not acceptable that a Palestinian state be established in exchange for ceding a span of the hand of Palestinian territories.”

1. Do you know if South Sudan is going to recognise a Palestinian state?

It'll be interesting to see how they vote in the General Assembly. I did google to see if I could find out, but only found this article which talks of some lofty aspirations of South Sudan in helping to bring peace to the region, which would account for the annoyance at being brought up by Haniya.

3. South Sudan to Recognize Palestinian State at UN

CAIRO, August 6, 2011 (WAFA) – South Sudan announced Friday that it intends to recognize an independent Palestinian state within 1967 borders at the United Nations General Assembly when it comes up for a vote in September, according to Deng Alor, South Sudan's foreign minister.

He said that it is in his country's best interest to recognize Israel and a Palestinian state since both have already recognized South Sudan after if declared independence last month.

'We will recognize any state that recognizes us,' he said.

This announcement came in spite of official Israeli request from South Sudan to refrain from supporting the Palestinian bid to gain UN recognition in September.

If they would discriminate against myself or my friends for kissing each other on their street.

Then should not be recognized by my country AT ALL.


SO SOUTH SUDAN OR GAZA OR PALESTINE SHOULD NOT BE RECOGNIZED UNDER SUCH ATROCIOUS CIRCUMSTANCE.

I'm not sure what yr country is, but I suspect whatever it is, it did recognise South Sudan, and that yr country is one where discrimination against LGBTers happens....

There'd be quite a few issues where I strongly disagree with the stance of new countries, including LGBT rights, the death penalty and reproductive rights for women. But denying people their right of self-determination isn't the way to go. The way to go is fighting and gaining those rights within the framework of the new state...

8. Homosexuality has been legal in the W Bank longer than it has been so in Israel.

Homosexuality was legalized in the WB in 1956( 1951 when Jordan legalised it) and in Israel 1963. Gaza on the other hand considers homosexuality a crime when its between men but legal between women.

That said, despite its legalality Gays are heavily persecuted and discriminated against on both a private and official government level. They face physical harm including death due to such intolerance.

4. Haniya seems to be drifting into irrelevance, and Hamas is looking sickly.

The usual complete lack of any sense of Irony too, the PM of Hamas, the rulers of the autonomous territory of Gaza, says S. Sudan is a "foundling state".

Nevertheless, I think the weakening of Hamas could be very significant.
