| Prodi Says Anti-Semitism Not at Level of 1930s |
|
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Comparing modern anti-Semitism to that of the 1930s is an insult to the victims of the Holocaust, European Commission President Romano Prodi said on Thursday after a top U.S. diplomat had seemed to make the link. But Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, Prodi and others said action was needed to halt the resurgence of anti-semitism, which Wiesel called a "European disease."
"The Jewish communities in Europe live in fear," Wiesel said. He said some people had whispered their fears to him. "The question is not 'should we leave' but 'when should we leave'."
Cobi Benatoff, president of the European Jewish Congress, said: "The monster is here with us one more time."

There is no point in denying stuff like this, it is just so completly wimpy.
Anyway reading the story the denial has just given another opportunity for the original charges to be repeated just in case we missed it the first time.
If you play a game like American Football, and you are using one set of rules and your opponents are using another set which gives them a massive advantage, if you don't adopt your opponents set of rules then you get your arses kicked.
israel/u.s. smears Europe, then Europe should smear back ten times harder. If it escalates into war, it's where we are going anyway, we just get there quicker, which is fine by me because I am sick of this 'Phoney War' crap.

| 7. Why are people "whispering" to Elie Wiesel ? |
|
And where are they planning to go ? Israel ? I'd be surprised.
I would also like to know who is supposed to play the Hitler role in this re-enactment of the 1930s. We've already faced down the Hitler of the Middle East (that could be Saddam). Perhaps with a bit of gumption and two or three weeks we can put the new European Hitler behind us too.
Meanwhile, the cowboys in Israel keep on herding the indians into smaller and smaller reservations.

Well, the Palestinians and their Arab buddies do make Israel a tough choice. Hmmm, European anti-Semitism or Arab anti-Semitism?

| 9. But I thought Israel would always be the refuge ? |

Perhaps Herzl's dream has created 50 years of turmoil for nothing. He wouldn't be the first visionary to have the left the world worse off for opening his mouth.

It will always be so. Not everyone is prepared to go into the equivalent of a combat zone, however. Some also may be drawn to places with relatives -- like the U.S.

| 12. Combat zone as refuge ! |

I thought a refuge was supposed to be safer than the places you were fleeing from. Kind of defeats the purpose. At least busloads of Jews aren't blowing up in nasty old France.

In Israel, Jews know they will fight to the very last if need be. Maybe, in the final analysis, that is all the refuge the Jewish people will ever get from those who hate them.

How would he know.
Actually, in this case, he's absolutely right. But the idea of a Catholic lecturing Jews on the nature or severity of anti-Semitism is about as ludicrous as me (a white guy) lecturing black people on what it means to be black in a racist society.
