Report: Palestinians fire new type of rocket at Sderot

Palestinians fired a new, advanced type of Qassam rocket at a residential area of Sderot early Friday morning, Israel Radio reported.

The radio quoted Lachish region police commander Nissim Mor as saying the rocket attack constituted an escalation. The more sophisticated rocket, called a Nasser 3 rocket, carries more explosive material and has a longer range than the type of Qassam that Palestinians usually use in attacks, according to the report.

However, reports earlier this month that the Palestinians had fired a rocket more advanced than the Qassam were later said by police to be false.

One person went into shock and the rocket, which landed in the backyard of a house in the southern city, caused minor damage to the outer wall of the house and to a garden shed.
