Arafat joins prisoners' hunger strike

Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat joined a hunger strike Wednesday along with other PA officials in sympathy with Palestinian detainees in Israeli security detention facilities across the country.

An additional 600 Palestinian detainees have joined the strike bringing the total to 3,000, reported Army Radio Wednesday morning. However, many cases of strike breaking have been reported, including imprisoned Fatah head Marwan Barghouti.

Arafat addressed the Palestinian legislative council at his headquarters in Ramallah late Wednesday morning.

He called the hunger strikers Shahids (martyrs) and said "we should all be prepared to be Shahids."

Admittedly I know nothing of this news source, although "Israeli National News" doesn't sound the most unbiased.

About your post above stating I must "surely realize prisoners can be observed". Of course I realize that, as surely as you must realized everything you hear isn't true and links to back up claims are usually needed.

Jerusalem - The number of hunger-striking Palestinians in Israeli jails has almost doubled to 2 900 in the week since the protest was launched, the Prisons Service said on Sunday.

But Israel vowed not to budge on the prisoners' demands that wardens stop strip searches, allow more frequent family visits, improve sanitation and install public telephones.
