Judoka Arik Ze'evi, one of Israel's leading hopes for a medal at Athens, won his first fight in the men's 100 kg category on Thursday.
Ze'evi, the defending European champion and the world number 2, overcame world number 3 Mario Sabino of Brazil. Next, Ze'evi will face Italian Monti, who defeated the Sydney 2000 silver medalist, Nicolas Gill of Canada.
Ze'evi has a tough draw, but has avoided gold medal favorite Kosei Inoue of Japan, whom he will meet only in the final.

In a botched rescue attempt after a 20-hour standoff, nine more Israeli athletes were killed, as well as five terrorists and a German policeman.
