Judo medal hopeful Arik Ze'evi goes into action

Judoka Arik Ze'evi, one of Israel's leading hopes for a medal at Athens, won his first fight in the men's 100 kg category on Thursday.

Ze'evi, the defending European champion and the world number 2, overcame world number 3 Mario Sabino of Brazil. Next, Ze'evi will face Italian Monti, who defeated the Sydney 2000 silver medalist, Nicolas Gill of Canada.

Ze'evi has a tough draw, but has avoided gold medal favorite Kosei Inoue of Japan, whom he will meet only in the final.

On September 5, 1972, Palestinian terrorists stormed an Olympic Village apartment house at the Munich Olympics, killing two Israeli athletes and holding the others hostage in an effort to bargain for the freedom of 200 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. In a botched rescue attempt after a 20-hour standoff, nine more Israeli athletes were killed, as well as five terrorists and a German policeman.

We are here to discuss the issues. On other threads the Olympics and Olympic winners have been brought in. The commemoration is part of the Olympic ceremony and has been for years.

The Judo match was won by Ze'evi, by the way.

what is the point of this article - absolutely NOTHING to do with the conflict - Olympic threads have been brought up in the lounge and some in GD.

This is not 500 years ago. It has a great deal to do with the I/P conflict as it was an attack by the PLO on Israelis, and a civilian target. I would think you would remember to condemn such acts whenever they occur.

they occurred in 1972 - not now. If it happened in Athens of course I would condemn it and I resent the implication that I wouldn't.

Are you going to start every post from now on with a condemnation of the massacres at Deir Yassin, Sabra and Shatilla, after all they didn't happen 500 years ago either AND the man responsible for two of them is your PM
